Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of redox is rapidly changing, specifically in relation to plants where redox reactions are exacerbated compared to non-photosynthetic organisms. The development of proteomics has allowed the identification of hundreds of molecular targets of these systems, and the recent discovery of glutaredoxin's ability to bind iron sulfur centers (ISCs) and to participate in ISC assembly in other apoproteins has provided many new insights. This volume presents new research on oxidative stress in plants, ranging from the production of reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species, to their accumulation, their involvement in signal transduction, and their degradation, while also covering the links among oxidative stress and biotic and abiotic stresses. - Cutting-edge reviews written from a broad range of scientific perspectives - For over 40 years, series has enjoyed a reputation for excellence - Contributors internationally recognized authorities in their respective fields

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antioxidants in Higher Plants provides a unique blend of molecular and biochemical approaches to cover the state of the art in antioxidant function. The chemistry and protective potential of sulfhydryl and hydroxyl compounds are emphasized. Interesting perspectives are presented regarding the response of antioxidant metabolism to interactions among environmental pollutants, illumination, temperature, and water availability. The book also discusses how tools of molecular biology may further clarify antioxidant function and response to stress. Antioxidants in Higher Plants will be an excellent reference for plant physiologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, ecologists, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol and other drugs of abuse are major contributing factors to liver disease and its pathology. Alcoholic cirrhosis causes thousands of deaths each year in the United States, and encourages liver replacement. A better understanding of the mechanisms of liver pathology will significantly aid basic researchers and physicians in treating and preventing liver damage. This book is designed especially for those researchers wishing to understand alcoholic liver disease. Therefore the role of alcohol in changing nutrition and its nutritional effects on liver disease are reviewed. The generation of free radicals during alcohol use has been found to be an important cause of membrane changes, of cancer development, and of lipid alterations-and thus of liver pathology. In addition to alcohol, other drugs of abuse, including morphine, cocaine, marijuana, and caffeine have also been shown to be significant contributors to liver pathology. The prevalence of drug and alcohol use and abuse today means that liver disease will continue as a major social and medical problem. The explanation of its biological origins cannot fail to help us better understand and treat the disease in the years to come.

Book excerpt: Growing plants have a constitutive demand for sulfur to synthesize proteins, sulfolipids and other essential sulfur containing molecules for growth and development. The uptake and subsequent distribution of sulfate is regulated in response to demand and environmental cues. The importance of sulfate for plant growth and vigor and hence crop yield and nutritional quality for human and animal diets has been clearly recognized. The acquisition of sulfur by plants, however, has become an increasingly important concern for the agriculture due to the decreasing S-emissions from industrial sources and the consequent limitation of inputs from atmospheric deposition. Molecular characterization involving transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics in Arabidopsis thaliana as well as in major crops revealed that sulfate uptake, distribution and assimilation are finely regulated depending on sulfur status and demand, and that these regulatory networks are integrated with cell cycle, photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, hormonal signaling, uptake and assimilation of other nutrients, etc., to enable plant growth, development, and reproduction even under different biotic and abiotic stresses. This knowledge can be used to underpin approaches to enhance plant growth and nutritional quality of major food crops around the world. Although considerable progress has been made regarding the central role of sulfur metabolism in plant growth, development and stress response, several frontiers need to be explored to reveal the mechanisms of the cross-talk between sulfur metabolism and these processes. In this research topic the knowledge on plant sulfur metabolism is reviewed and updated. Focus is put not only on molecular mechanisms of control of sulfur metabolism but also on its integration with other vital metabolic events. The topic covers 4 major areas of sulfur research: sulfate uptake, assimilation and metabolism, regulation, and role in stress response. We hope that the topic will promote interaction between researchers with different expertise and thus contribute to a more integrative approach to study sulfur metabolism in plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest and research in urinary enzymology were incited about three decades ago by reports that urinary enzymes are elevated in diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. Of the more than 40 hydrolases, oxidoreductases, transferases, and lyases identified in human and animal urine, only ten or so are being used as diagnostic indicators. Recognition of the quantitative distribution of enzymes in the various anatomical and functional parts of the nephron and advances in our understanding of the handling of proteins by the kidney have made it possible to associate urinary enzyme activity patterns with physiological and pathophysio logical functions of the nephron. Confidence in the diagnostic value of urinary enzymes is not unanimous among clinicians and among scientists. The main reason for the difference in opinion may well be that the variability in data exceeds the variability one is accustomed to in the diagnostic enzymology of blood plasma enzymes. In contrast to plasma enzymes, which are protected by an "enzyme friendly" milieu, enzymes released into the urine encounter an "enzyme hostile" environ ment: no or little protective protein, variable pH, variable volume, variable metabolite and salt concentrations, variable concentrations of enzyme in hibitors. Through advances in methodology some of these factors can now be controlled; standardization of urine collection periods and preanalytical treat ment are as important as optimization of assay methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skeletal Research, An Experimental Approach discusses experimental studies on bone cell and tissue biochemistry, biomechanics, isolation, and methods of analysis. Divided into four parts encompassing 21 chapters, this book describes the advantages and limitations of approaches and options available for bone laboratories. The opening part of this book describes the isolation, characterization, and methods of analysis of bone and cartilage cells and their organ cultures. This description is followed by discussions on the intermediary metabolism of growth and articular cartilage; the isolation of plasma membranes from calcified connective tissues; and the aspects of lipidology as it applies to calcified tissue. The third part of this book focuses on the chemical, histochemical, and pathophysiological studies of bone as tissue. This text includes significant chapters on bone's biomechanics and bioelectricity; bone mineral composition; collagen biochemistry; calcium metabolism; and blood flow. Studies on bone and cartilage as circadian systems in rats and mice, emphasizing the importance of this aspect of experimental design, are covered in the concluding part of this book. This text is an ideal resource to experienced researchers and young investigators who wish to expand their technical knowledge on bone research.
