Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists have proposed several different models for the relationship between social science theory, empirical social research and the actual making of public social policy. This book, first published in 1980, seeks to provide a critical analysis of the impact of research on policy through the detailed examination of the part which research played in the work of Royal Commissions of Inquiry, the bodies set up by government to consider, gather evidence on, report and make recommendations about specific policy areas. This titles varied and stimulating chapters will serve to shed considerable light, not all of it positive, upon the potential contribution of the social sciences to the practice of government. This book will be of interest to students of the social sciences, particularly sociology and politics.
Book Synopsis The English Local Government System by : J. H. Warren
Download or read book The English Local Government System written by J. H. Warren and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1946, The English Local Government System has undoubtedly been one of the most successful introductory books on this subject. The purpose of this book is not so much to describe the various local government services, but rather to discuss the machinery and methods utilized in the provision of these services. It discusses crucial themes like business yardsticks; the constitutional setting; judicial control; the associations of local authorities; the financial basis; state grants and providing for capital expenditure; the local authority’s constitution; the impact of politics on administration; delegation of powers to committees; the need for reform; and central local relationships. This is an important historical reference work for students of public administration and British government and politics.
Book Synopsis The Reorganisation of British Local Government by : John Dearlove
Download or read book The Reorganisation of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Download or read book Fostering blueprints for local government development written by Marissa M. Bell, and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Local Government Development Framework (LGDF) is a local governance performance measurement and monitoring tool based on government-citizen collaboration. Developed by RTI International, the LGDF provides for the establishment of demand-driven benchmarks and participatory assessments for the improvement of local governance, service delivery in particular. The paper presents the development-project origins of the LGDF beginning in the 1980s, comparatively examines LGDF’s strengths and weaknesses, and provides a step-by-step discussion of its utilization. Four developing countries in which the LGDF has been applied serve as examples. The LGDF involves, first, the establishment of performance benchmarks for the priority functions of the local government. Second, local officials and community stakeholders come together to collaboratively assess and score progress toward achieving the benchmarks. Third, local officials working with stakeholders develop action plans for achieving priority objectives. Finally, the process is regularly repeated to identify areas of improvement and future capacity-building needs. Successful implementation of the LGDF, we conclude, requires leadership, well-aligned political incentives, proper design and implementation, and dedication to the process. Yet it has withstood the test of time and proven to be an effective tool for bringing government together with the community to achieve local development objectives.
