Es una constante en este libro el reconocimiento la obra de Bruner y las implicaciones de su psicología cultural en la educación, resaltando la idea de que no se puede entender la actividad mental a no ser que se tenga en cuenta el contexto cultural y los recursos que le dan a la mente forma y potencialidad de desarrollo. El profesor debe reconocer que las nuevas generaciones no solo deben aprender a gestionar grandes cantidades de información y a moverse en un mundo tecnológico de grandes cambios, sino a aprender a tener un concepto de sí mismo como ciudadano del mundo al mismo tiempo que ha de respetar su identidad local. Se espera que la lectura de este libro facilite que los profesores entiendan la importancia de crear y participar en comunidades de aprendizaje profundo, comunidades en la que se reconozca la importancia de que los aprendices hagan una reflexión mutua sobre aquello que quieren aprender. La reflexión crítica con otros es necesaria si se quiere contribuir a que las cosas mejoren. Cuando los profesores forman parte de una comunidad de aprendizaje orientada a la transformación pueden reflexionar sobre sus experiencias vividas con otros que, como ellos, están buscando nuevas formas de hacerse docentes que permitan avanzar en la equidad y la excelencia en el aprendizaje.

Book excerpt: El estudio de la figura del profesor universitario va cobrando día a día una mayor importancia debido fundamentalmente a los cambios políticos y sociales que la universidad del presente siglo está pasando. Ésta circunstancia nos plantea la necesidad de estudiar la figura del docente universitario, pero concretándolo en un periodo de su etapa formativa, que no es otra que el período de inducción a la práctica profesional. Durante este período el profesor universitario aprender a enseñar, poniendo de manifiesto todas sus creencias, visiones, conocimientos y desconocimientos sobre las materias a desarrollar, la vida universitaria, el alumno universitario, etc. El desarrollo del estudio tuvo lugar en la facultad de ciencias de la educación de la Universidad de Córdoba. Una vez obtenido los datos cuantitativos, se vio la necesidad de concretar estos a través de cuatro estudios de caso, dos profesores principiantes y dos profesores experimentados, los cuales a través de su voz realizaron un repaso de su vida profesional y personal, aportando información que concretaba algunos de los datos obtenidos en el estudio cuantitativo. El resultado del estudio fue el establecimiento de unos determinados factores que presenta la figura del profesor universitario durante su proceso de aprender a enseñar, además de la determinación de diferencias significativas entre profesores expertos y principiantes.
