Book excerpt: Biblical symbols were designed by God and by his people Israel to emphasize divine truths and to call believers to remembrance of responsibilities to worship and honor their Creator. Unfortunately, most Christians have been robbed of this insight by the historical church's separation from the Jewish people. Restoring Christianity's Hebraic foundations is essential for equipping believers with enriched understanding of the roots of their faith. Recognizing the historical and spiritual truths represented by the symbols of the Hebrew Scriptures is a profound means of underscoring the truth of Christianity's Jewish connection. Living Emblems: Ancient Symbols of Faith presents these vivid images of a rich biblically Hebraic tradition: The Shofar: A Trumpet in Zion; The Menorah: God's Lamp, Man's Light; The Mezuzah: A Sign at the Door; The Kiddush Cup: The Cup of Blessing. You'll be enriched as Living Emblems deeps your understanding of Jesus by revealing profound truths about his life and ministry through the powerful images reflected in the ancient symbols of biblical faith.

Book Synopsis A Book of Emblems by : Andrea Alciati
Download or read book A Book of Emblems written by Andrea Alciati and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrea Alciati's Emblematum Liber was an essential work for every writer, artist and scholar in post-medieval Europe. First published in 1531, this illustrated book was a collection of emblems, each consisting of a motto or proverb, a typically enigmatic illustration, and a short explanation. Most of the emblems had symbolic and moral applications. Scholars depended on Alciati's book to interpret contemporary art and literature, while writers and artists turned to it to invest their work with an understood didactic sense. This new edition of the Emblematum Liber includes the original Latin texts, highly readable English translations, and the illustrations belonging to each of the 212 emblems. The editor's introduction explains both the importance and the cultural contexts of Alciati's book, as well as its innumerable artistic applications. For instance, close study of the emblems reveals--to cite only two examples--why statues of lions are traditionally placed before government buildings, and what underlying political message was conveyed by innumerable equestrian portraits during the Baroque era. The collection includes as an appendix the formerly suppressed emblem, "Adversus Naturam Peccantes," accompanied by a translation of the learned commentary applied to it by Johann Thuilius in 1612. An extensive bibliography points the student to scholarly research specifically dealing with artistic applications of Alciati's emblems. Altogether, this new edition of Alciati's seminal work is an essential tool for modern students of the liberal arts.

Book Synopsis The Hem of His Garment by : John D. Garr
Download or read book The Hem of His Garment written by John D. Garr and published by Golden Key Press. This book was released on 2008-09-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his lifetime, Jesus was a Torah-observant Jew. He lived as a Jew, he worshipped as a Jew, and he dressed and groomed himself as a Jew. The very garments Jesus wore confirmed his Jewishness to all those who saw him. Failure to comprehend these simple biblical facts has robbed millions of Christians of spiritually enriching insight. They have missed the true picture of the Messiah because they have overlooked the details clearly present in the Apostolic Scriptures. Restoring the Hebraic foundations of the Christian faith is vital in this time when the Holy Spirit is leading believers back to long-neglected truth. Your life will be enriched as you understand the Jewish Jesus in his scriptural, historical, and cultural context. The Hem of His Garment presents these vivid images of the rich Hebraic tradition of the life and ministry of Jesus: A Mark of Remembrance; God Is With You; The Blessing Covering; A Garment of Light; A Prayer Closet; Healing Wings.
