Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of books, devoted to aspects of blood cell biochemistry, development, immu nology, and ultrastructure, has evolved and separated from the long-established Plenum series Subcellular Biochemistry. It is the intention of these volumes to draw together related areas of investigation and to provide, in the fullness of time, complete coverage of this rapidly advancing important biomedical discipline. Both fundamental and medically applied topics, dealing with normal and pathological cells, will be included. This, the first volume of the series, contains a diverse collection of chapters, all of which relate to erythroid cells. The range of material included is extremely broad and the authors have used contrasting technical approaches, both within their personal experimen tal studies and within their manuscripts. This has led to the production of a very interest ing compilation, which does, nevertheless, possess a strong overall thematic unity. As with all edited volumes, some topics of importance and interest are not included. This may be because of oversight on my part, as editor, or because the authors originally selected failed to submit their manuscript by the agreed-upon submission date. For these omissions I take full responsibility and trust that at least some of the topics omitted, for instance membrane cation transport systems, will be covered within a future volume of the series. This book commences with two chapters of a developmental nature.

Book excerpt: Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix: Third Edition Volume 2 presents a comprehensive examination of the intracellular lesion. It discusses the analysis of pathological tissues using electron microscope. It addresses the experimental procedures made on the cellular level. Some of the topics covered in the book are the structure, distribution, and variations of rod-shaped microtubulated bodies; morphology of intracytoplasmic filaments; melanosome-producing and melanosome-containing cells in tumours; myofilaments in striated muscle; and pathological variations in size, shape, and numbers of microbodies. The intracytoplasmic and intranuclear annulate lamellae are fully covered. An in-depth account of the classification, history, and nomenclature of lysosomes are provided. The morphology and normal variations of melanosomes and anchoring fibrils are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the endocytotic structures and cell processes. Another section focuses on the classification and nomenclature of fibrous components. The book can provide useful information to cytologists, pathologists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Ultrastructure Atlas of Human Tissues presents a variety of scanning and transmission electron microscope images of the major systems of the human body. Photography with the electron microscope records views of the intricate substructures and microdesigns of objects and tissues, and reveals details within them inaccessible to the naked eye or light microscope. Many of these views have significance in understanding normal structure and function, as well as disease processes. This book offers a unique and comprehensive look at the structure and function of tissues at the subcellular and molecular level, an important perspective in understanding and combating diseases. • Presents the major systems of the human body through scanning and transmission electron microscope images • Has images prepared almost exclusively from human tissues • Includes electron micrographs of common pathologies such as fibrotic and emphysemic lung, kidney stones, sickle cell anemia, and skin parasites • Contains sets of 3D images in most chapters

Book excerpt: This book is derived from contributions to the Second International Workshop on Mechanisms in Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity, held in Annopolis, Maryland, June 10-13, 1984. This workshop was organized by an international committee of immunologists interested in lymphocyte cytotoxic mechanisms (G. Berke, W.R. Clark, P. Golstein, M. Hanna, P. Henkart, R. Herberman, H.R. MacDonald, E. Martz, and C. Nathan), who strove to invite participants who have made major contributions to this field. The Workshop was a follow-up to the highly successful 1981 Workshop, whose proceedings Workshop were published by Plenum as Mechanisms in Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity, edited by W.R. Clark and P. Golstein. That volume has been much appreciated by researchers and students since it contains accounts of most of the current approaches to understanding cytotoxic lymphocyte mechanisms all in one volume. The present book may be viewed as a follow-up to the first one, and in our opinion fairly summarizes the varying current viewpoints on lymphocyte cytotoxic mechanism. It should be noted that the discussions have been transcribed directly by us, and the participants have not had an opportunity to edit their remarks. We have tried to maintain some of the style of the actual discussion in these transcripts. In some cases technical problems prevented usable transcriptions from being made, and hence not all of the actual discussion at the workshop is reproduced here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phagocytosis is the engulfment of particulate matter by cells. It is a fundamental (and probably “primitive”) cell biological process which is important in single celled organisms such as amoeba; multicellular animals including coelenterates; and in higher animals. In humans and other mammals, specialised immune cells (phagocytes) utilise phagocytosis in their crucial role of engulfing and destroying infecting microbes. Yet, surprisingly, the biophysics and biochemistry underlying the process has only become clear recently with the advent of genetic manipulation and advances in single cell imaging. In this volume, the aim is to bring together recent fundamental advances that give a clear picture of the underlying mechanism involved in phagocytosis. Not only is this an important topic in its own right, but a full understanding of the process will have a potential impact on human medicine, since as antibiotics become less effective in fight infection, researchers are looking at alternative approaches, including enhancing the “natural” immunity brought about by immune phagocytes. The aim is to provide a comprehensive volume on the topic, with separate chapters on identified recent advances, each written by the major contributors in each area. In addition, the volume will attempt to give a wider overview than is often the case in single author reviews, with an emphasis here on the cell biological understanding of phagocytosis using biophysical approaches alongside the biochemical and imaging approaches.

Book excerpt: The author of this remarkably comprehensive review, PIERRE DUSTIN, has performed an invaluable service in bringing to gether in one volume the observations and theory on micro tubules that have accumulated over the last fifteen years. He has understood the magnitude of the task from the beginning and has met it thoroughly and, I must say, courageously. From here on, and for many years to come, young investiga tors, and some not so young, will have a ready reference as they seek to discover what has been done and remains to be done in achieving a better understanding of these important cell components. Since the early 1960's when it became clear that the fila ments (micro tubules) making up the 9 + 2 complex of cilia and flagella were to be found very widely in cells, microtub ules have attracted an ever-increasing amount of attention. Now it is known, as reviewed in this volume, that they influ ence the morphogenesis of anisometry in the shapes of cells and cell extensions; that they function as frames for the intra cellular movement of granules and chromosomes; that they are subject to control in their assembly and disassembly by externally applied substances such as colchicine and cyclic AMP; and that they display abnormalities in their numbers and orientations in transformed (malignant) cells, to mention only a few of their several functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was just about ten years ago that platelet membrane glycoproteins were first charac terized and their abnormalities in congenital bleeding disorders first recognized. Dur ing this decade there has been a remarkable growth in our understanding of the structure and membrane organization of the platelet surface glycoproteins, their in teractions with external ligands during the process of hemostasis, and their defects causing hemorrhagic disease. These studies have advanced the knowledge of platelet involvement in hemostasis from a cellular to a molecular level, and they have provided a model for contact interactions among other cell types. This seemed a proper time to ask those who contributed major observations and insights during these past years to review their progress and to assess the state of our present knowledge. We have planned this volume to begin with the biochemistry of platelet membrane glycoproteins themselves and proceed through their involvement in platelet function to the final considerations of the platelet's role in maintaining the integrity of the vascular system. Our aim was an integrated presentation on the blood platelet from the perspective of its highly specialized and reactive cell surface. James N. George Alan T. Nurden David R. Phillips vii Contents I.
