Book Synopsis Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies by : Kenneth Douglas McRae
Download or read book Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies written by Kenneth Douglas McRae and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the French Revolution, Switzerland developed from a country in which German dominated linguistically into a confederation of four officially recognised language groups -- German, French, Italian, Romansh -- concentrated in different geographical areas and marked by distinctive cultures and lifestyles. Following a historical overview of this development and the social and political institutionalisation of the linguistic cleavages, McRae's study examines key elements in the functioning of modern Swiss society; political parties, federal and cantonal institutions, the media, educational and cultural policies, the relation between the linguistic cleavages and class and religion, the attitudes and behaviour of the four language groups to one another. It concludes by reviewing the various explanations advanced to explain the relative social and political stability of Switzerland.

Book Synopsis Multilingualism within Nation States and the Danger of Separation by : Gordon Wagner
Download or read book Multilingualism within Nation States and the Danger of Separation written by Gordon Wagner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,0, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: Language and Identity, language: English, abstract: Worldwide, there are almost 6,800 languages in 228 countries and approximately 200 languages that have more than one million native speakers. There are even less official nation states existing, according to various sources between 192 and 195. Obviously, not every single country or nation state exclusively contains citizens speaking only one language and we don’t need to seek out long, but instead take a look to member states of the European Union (EU) as there are countries like Belgium, Luxembourg and Ireland that are officially tri- and/or bilingual. On one hand, this suggests the existence of a considerately strong movement of native speakers among the respective country’s citizens that are not willing to accept merely one mother language (as is the case in Ireland, where both Irish and English are officially recognized idioms). On the other hand, it might indicate the existence of a potential language conflict situation – and indeed there are multilingual nation states in which this proves to be the case. There are many such examples throughout the world, e.g. Belgium, Spain and its various autonomous communities) or the Canadian province Québec. In fact, established nation states are threatened to break in part due to their citizens speaking utterly different languages and instead of just one with varying accents and/or dialects. So how do countries deal with these issues? What are the possible consequences of using more than one official language among an established nation state and how might this shape the citizens’ perception and consciousness on a wider range?

Book Synopsis Ethnic Conflict in the Western World by : Milton J. Esman
Download or read book Ethnic Conflict in the Western World written by Milton J. Esman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, in the late 1960's, did ethnic minorities such as Scots and Welsh, Quebecois, Bretons and Basques unexpectedly begin to protest and assert their demands with fresh vigor, confidence, and even violence? What are the factors that help to explain the activation of these ethnic political movements, some of which now threaten the continued integrity of such long-established states as Canada and Great Britain? This book represents the first systematic attempt to deal with the re-emergence of ethnic conflict in Western societies. In addition to three historical and theoretical essays, there are eleven case studies of countries where ethnic nationalism has become politically significant. In a concluding chapter the editor comments on the theoretical and policy implications of the country studies.

The first addresses general issues in second language instruction: its nature, the component parts, goals, and problems. The second part focuses on the classroom participants, teachers and learners, and the kinds of exchanges that occur in the classroom, group dynamics, the teacher's preparations, the teacher's role in classroom communication, correction of errors, and evaluation of oral expression. The third section contains items concerning the evolution or unfolding of the class from the point of view of theme and mood. The fourth section looks at pedagogical trends and the implications of their application. Annotations of works published in French are written in French; those of works published in English are written in English. (MSE).
