Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the problems of stochastic (or probabilistic) programming. The author took as his basis the specialized lectures which he delivered to the graduates from the economic cybernetics department of Leningrad University beginning in 1967. Since 1971 the author has delivered a specialized course on Stochastic Programming to the gradu ates from the faculty of applied mathematics/management processes at Leningrad University. The present monograph consists of seven chapters. In Chapter I, which is of an introductory character, consideration is given to the problems of uncertainty and probability, used for modelling complicated systems. Fundamental indications for the classification of stochastic pro gramming problems are given. Chapter II is devoted to the analysis of various models of chance-constrained stochastic programming problems. Examples of technological and applied economic problems of management with chance-constraints are given. In Chapter III two-stage stochastic programming problems are investigated, various models are given, and these models are qualitatively analyzed. In the conclusion of the chapter consideration is given to: the transport problem with random data, the problem of the determination of production volume, and the problem of planning the flights of aircraft as two-stage stochastic programming problems. Multi-stage stochastic programming problems are investigated in Chapter IV. The dependencies between prior and posterior decision rules and decision distributions are given. Dual problems are investigated.

Kolbin, and "Application of Queueing-Theoretic Methods in Operations Research, " by N. Po Buslenko and A. P. Cherenkovo The first article covers almost all aspects of stochastic programming. Many of the results presented in it have not pre viously been surveyed in the Soviet literature and are of interest to both mathematicians and economists. The second article com prises an exhaustive treatise on the present state of the art of the statistical methods of queueing theory and the statistical modeling of queueing systems as applied to the analysis of complex systems. Book excerpt: Linear programming has attracted the interest of mathematicians since World War II when the first computers were constructed. Early attempts to apply linear programming methods practical problems failed, in part because of the inexactness of the data used to create the models. This book presents a comprehensive treatment of linear optimization with inexact data, summarizing existing results and presenting new ones within a unifying framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms are a fundamental component of robotic systems. Robot algorithms process inputs from sensors that provide noisy and partial data, build geometric and physical models of the world, plan high-and low-level actions at different time horizons, and execute these actions on actuators with limited precision. The design and analysis of robot algorithms raise a unique combination of questions from many elds, including control theory, computational geometry and topology, geometrical and physical modeling, reasoning under uncertainty, probabilistic algorithms, game theory, and theoretical computer science. The Workshop on Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics (WAFR) is a single-track meeting of leading researchers in the eld of robot algorithms. Since its inception in 1994, WAFR has been held every other year, and has provided one of the premiere venues for the publication of some of the eld's most important and lasting contributions. This books contains the proceedings of the tenth WAFR, held on June 13{15 2012 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The 37 papers included in this book cover a broad range of topics, from fundamental theoretical issues in robot motion planning, control, and perception, to novel applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conical approach provides a geometrical understanding of optimization and is a powerful research tool and useful problem-solving technique (for example, in decision support and real time control applications). Conical optimality conditions are first stated in a very general optimization framework, and then applied to linear programming. A complete theory along with primal and dual algorithms is given, and solutions and algorithms are also provided for vector and robust linear optimization. The advantages of parameter dependence of conical methods are fully discussed. In addition to numerical results, the book provides source codes and detailed documentation of a Modula-2 implementation for the main algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the linear programming literature, by explaining the steps that are illustrated but not always fully explained in every elementary operations book - the steps that lead from the elementary and intuitive graphical method of solution to the more advanced simplex tableau method. Most of the world, even those technically trained, can get along very well by seeing a few illustrations of simple linear programming problems solved graphically, followed by instruction in the use of computer software for solving real-world problems. But there needs to be a coterie of initiates who understand the process well enough to explain it to others, to know what the pitfalls, ramifications and special cases are, and to provide further developments. I have used an informal narrative style with a number of worked out examples and detailed explanations, to put the topic within reach.
