Book excerpt: Excerpt from Line Breeding for the Pigeon Fancier This is the second of my serial articles to be published in Brochure form and is published at the request Of many of those who have the No. 1. Of my Practical Hint Series. While following the main lines of the article published in Pigeons it has been revised and re-written very carefully, as it is intended not only for the boy fancier, the beginner, but also for the Older ones as well. The Fancier from whose strain this scheme was drawn vouches for every Word as being the truth. Not being a wealthy man, he was obliged to begin at the bottom, but he reached the top. Several of his wins were made in classes of 21 and 25 birds respectively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pigeon Book It will not be possible in a work Of this description to give descriptive matter of any great length relative to the different varieties, but they will be briefly dealt with in order that a beginner taking an interest in the breeding of pigeons may know the main points of distinction between them, likewise their points Of excellence and the most difficult features connected with their breeding. In this matter, as no man is a thorough master breeder of all the varieties, I have called to my aid several of the best-known breeders, who have been good enough to deal with some of the varieties as specialists Of these varieties. I have to thank them for the help rendered me in the compila tion of this book, adding so much to its interest. Darwin expresses the Opinion that all the varieties Of pigeons that have been domesticated trace their origin to the Blue Rock Dove (columbia Livia), and to establish this fact mentions that if any domesticated variety Of the pigeon family is allowed to run to seed without the careful selection of the fancier, distinct features of Columbia Livia are reproduced in them. In a small handbook of this description, it will not be found possible to trace the different varieties to their source, or to deal at any considerable length with the crossings that have been used by fanciers to improve or modify a variety. All manner of breeds have been used by the skilled fancier for this purpose, so cleverly in some cases as to leave little or no trace of their use, but I am convinced that there is hardly a variety in existence to-day in which a cross of some other variety has not been used to beautify it - it may be in colour, shape, or marking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pigeon Raising Princes, poets, prelates, judges, and ladies of high degree have been in the ranks of the pigeon fancier during ages past, for pigeon fancy antedates the Christian era, and we have record that they took keen pleasure in their pigeon lofts and the company of their birds. The results these great people accomplished appear marvelous when we examine the various breeds that have sprung, as Darwin assures us, from the parent stock of the rock-pigeon, or Wild pigeon, of Europe and North Africa. It was love for their birds that enabled them to accomplish these results, that gave them the patience to persevere through discouragements. Gentleness, kindness, and patience are the first requisites for the pigeon raiser to possess, coupled with a clear, methodical business head. Included are insights into how pigeons were housed, fed, reared and treated for common ailments. Also offered are the histories and descriptions of pigeon breeds which were popularly kept in England during those days, including Carriers, Flying Tumblers, Almond Tumblers, Mottled Tumblers, Baldhead Tumblers, Pouters, Horsemen, Croppers, Dragoons, Runts, Trumpeters, Jacobins, Turbits, Owls, Nuns, Helmets, Magpies, Spots, Fantails, Barbs and others. Are they not in comparably beautiful, as they tessellate the earth with a wealth of colour and cunning diversity of design A plainer vesture might have answered every material purpose of the flower's creation. There was no necessity for that blaze of colour if its only office was to feed the cattle or manure the soil. A common garment would have done for these common purposes. But because it was an ordained minister of God to appeal to the higher faculties of man, and bear its royal witness to the King of human hearts and lives, therefore was it clothed with a courtier's robes, and decked with the honours of heaven's am bassador. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fantail Pigeon: How to Breed, Manage, and Exhibit It seems strange that although amongst the Fancy proper there should be so few steadfast adherents to the Fantail, yet amongst those who keep Pigeons merely as a hobby, it is one of the most popular and largely kept varieties. Again, many fanciers of other varieties keep an odd pair or two of Fans just for the love of the thing, as they say, and because they like to see them about. Its graceful carriage and peculiar motion make the F antail a very interesting bird to anyone; in fact, at a Show, no class attracts so much attention from visitors as does that set apart for the jaunty little Fan.
