Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the application of optimal, multiobjective control theory control theory to flight control design for the approach and landing phase of flight. Five flight control systems were designed using classical, H2, H infinity, and Mixed H2/H infinity methods. The MATLAB(Trade Mark) MUTOOLS(Trade Mark) and AFIT MXTOOLS toolboxes were used to produce the optimal, multiobjective designs. These designs were implemented for flight test on the Calspan VSS I Learjet, simulating the unstable longitudinal dynamics of an F-16 type aircraft. A limited handling qualities investigation was performed. Model following was used in the design phase to meet handling qualities specifications. The designs were successfully implemented and verified on the Calspan Learjet prior to flight test. An unmodeled aircraft mode was discovered just prior to flight test that made three of the designs slightly unstable. However, all of the designs achieved Level II or better Cooper-Harper handling qualities ratings for the landing tasks performed illustrating that the optimal multiobjective methods used can give acceptable or better handling qualities.

The Get Transfer Function (GetTF) method was demonstrated for evaluating the handling qualities of flight control systems and aircraft containing nonlinearities. NASA's Generic Transport Model (GTM), a nonlinear model of a civilian jet transport aircraft, was evaluated. Using classical techniques, the stability, control, and augmentation (SCAS) systems were designed to control pitch rate, roll rate, and airspeed. Hess's structural pilot model was used to model pilot dynamics in pitch and roll-attitude tracking. The simulated task was simultaneous tracking of, both, pitch and roll attitudes. Eight cases were evaluated: 1) gain increase of pitch-attitude command signal, 2) gain increase of roll-attitude command signal, 3) gain reduction of elevator command signal, 4) backlash in elevator actuator, 5) combination 3 and 4 in elevator actuator, 6) gain reduction of aileron command signal, 7) backlash in aileron actuator, and 8) combination of 6 and 7 in aileron actuator. The GetTF method was used to estimate the transfer function approximating a linear relationship between the proprioceptive signal of the pilot model and the command input. The transfer function was then used to predict the handling qualities ratings (HQR) and pilot-induced oscillation ratings (PIOR). The HQR is based on the Cooper-Harper rating scale. In pitch-attitude tracking, the nominal aircraft is predicted to have Level 2* HQR[subscript]pitch and 2 PIOR[subscript]pitch

Two dual channel digital computers and the associated software provide command signals to a dual channel series servo which controls the stabilizer power actuators. Input sensor signals to the computer are pitch rate, column trim position, and dynamic pressure. Control laws are given for the PACS and the system architecture is defined. Discussions are given regarding piloted flight simulation and vehicle system simulation and vehicle system simulation tests that are performed to verify control laws and system operation prior to installation on the aircraft. Modifications to the basic aircraft included installation of the PACS, addition of a c.g. management system to provide a c.g. range from 25 to 39% mac, and downrigging of the geared elevator to provide the required nose down control authority for aft c.g. flight test conditions. Three pilots used the Cooper-Harper Rating Scale to judge flying qualities of the aircraft with PACS on and off. The handling qualities with the c.g. at 39% mac (41% stability margin) and PACS operating were judged to be as good as the handling qualities with the c.g. at 25% mac (+15% stability margin) and PACS off. Book excerpt: The results of a flight test program to investigate the effects of higher-order control system dynamics on the handling qualities of a fighter airplane are presented and discussed. This research was undertaken using the variable stability T-33 airplane as an in-flight simulator. This in-flight investigation was based on a similar fixed-base ground simulator program. Higher-order response characteristics were obtained by altering the elevator stick feel system dynamics and elevator actuator dynamics in conjunction with four different sets of longitudinal short period airplane dynamics. In the investigation, the dynamics of any of the three elements (feel system, actuator, and airplane) could be changed independently of the others. Three of the set of four airplane characteristics were investigated as a fighter in 'up-and-away' flight, and the fourth was evaluated as a fighter during landing approach. Thirty-two different configurations were evaluated by one evaluation pilot (Pilot B) and 35 configurations were evaluated by a second evaluation pilot (Pilot H). Essentially the same configurations were evaluated by both pilots and rated using a new pilot rating scale. Pilot H also rated the configurations for their pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies using a PIO rating scale. Pilot comments were recorded in flight and the comments and ratings were related to various handling qualities parameters and response characteristics of the configurations. (Author).

Development of a method for choosing the desired eigenstructure of the augmented, closed-loop system which would meet the handling qualities specifications was examined. This method consisted of forming an optimal plant matrix which possessed desirable dynamic characteristics and performing a spectral decomposition of this matrix. The resulting eigenstructure was used as the desired eigenvalues and eigenvectors during the full-state feedback, eigenstructure assignment process. The resulting feedback gain matrix was used in the control system. This process was performed on a model of the X-29A using the canard, flaperon, and strake flap control surfaces. The resulting augmented system was evaluated using the Neal-Smith pilot-model analysis and also using an X-29A main-in-the-loop simulation. The results show that the method is very promising, although care must be taken that all anticipated control system dynamics are considered when forming the optimal A matrix.

Pilot comments during the IRAC research flights pointed to the importance of workload on handling qualities ratings for failure and damage scenarios. Modifications to existing pilot aggressiveness and duty cycle metrics are presented and applied to the IRAC controllers. Book excerpt: The systems-analysis theory of handling qualities (which describes the pilot's adaptive behavior in closed-loop operation by servo techniques, and relates his opinion-ratings to his adapted characteristics and the system performance) is used to reveal some important parameters associated with the numerator terms in the airframe longitudinal transfer function. The predictions are verified by five experienced test pilots operating in a fixed-base aircraft simulator. Four possible numerator effects on handling qualities are analyzed theoretically: short-period lead effect on pitch attitude tracking, static-to-short-period gain effects on attitude tracking, short-period lead effects on the control of short-period divergence, and numerator frequency and damping effects on altitude tracking. The results are correlated with other test work, and the implications of these results on future handling qualities research and specifications are discussed.
