Book excerpt: The object of this investigation was to evaluate two commonly used laboratory methods for determining the "lime-requirement" of highly weathered acid soils of the humid tropics and to study the fate of CaCO3 applied to these soils. The standard of comparison for the lime-requirement was the maximum amount of CaCO3 decomposed by the soils upon equilibration of the soils with an excess of CaCO3 and the partial pressure of CO2 of the air. The two common laboratory methods for determining the lime-requirement of soils examined in the present study were the sal (1N KCl) extractable acidity and the exchange acidity as determined by the BaCl2-triethanolamine (TEA) method. The soil samples used fromin this study comproside the Ap and B2 horizons of highly-weathered soils from seven different locations in Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, known to represent extensive areas of potentially productiove agricultural soils.
