Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this investigation was to evaluate two commonly used laboratory methods for determining the "lime-requirement" of highly weathered acid soils of the humid tropics and to study the fate of CaCO3 applied to these soils. The standard of comparison for the lime-requirement was the maximum amount of CaCO3 decomposed by the soils upon equilibration of the soils with an excess of CaCO3 and the partial pressure of CO2 of the air. The two common laboratory methods for determining the lime-requirement of soils examined in the present study were the sal (1N KCl) extractable acidity and the exchange acidity as determined by the BaCl2-triethanolamine (TEA) method. The soil samples used fromin this study comproside the Ap and B2 horizons of highly-weathered soils from seven different locations in Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, known to represent extensive areas of potentially productiove agricultural soils.

Book excerpt: 2009 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice This acclaimed textbook is the most comprehensive available in the field of forest ecology. Designed for advanced students of forest science, ecology, and environmental studies, it is also an essential reference for forest ecologists, foresters, and land managers. The authors provide an inclusive survey of boreal, temperate, and tropical forests with an emphasis on ecological concepts across scales that range from global to landscape to microscopic. Situating forests in the context of larger landscapes, they reveal the complex patterns and processes observed in tree-dominated habitats. The updated and expanded second edition covers • Conservation • Ecosystem services • Climate change • Vegetation classification • Disturbance • Species interactions • Self-thinning • Genetics • Soil influences • Productivity • Biogeochemical cycling • Mineralization • Effects of herbivory • Ecosystem stability

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil acidity is a major limitation to crop production in many parts of the world. Plant growth inhibition results from a combination of factors, including aluminum, manganese, and hydrogen ion toxicities and deficiencies of essential elements, particularly calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Agricultural management practices and acid precipitation have increased acid inputs into the ecosystem and heightened concern about soil acidity problems. While application of lime has proved to be effective in ameliorating surface soil acidity in many areas, significant soil acidity problems still exist. Scientists from Alberta, Canada, recognized the need to provide a forum for researchers from different disciplines to exchange information and ideas on solving problems of plant growth in acid soils. As a result of their efforts, the First International Symposium on Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH was held at Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, in July 1987. In many acid soil areas, liming materials are not readily available, the cost may be prohibitive, or subsoil acidity cannot be corrected by surface application of lime. New management approaches involving both the plant and the soil are needed in these situations. Progress has been made in the selection and breeding of acid-tolerant plants. However, continued progress will be limited by our lack of understanding of the physiological and biochemical basis of differential acidity tolerance among plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecophysiology of Tropical Crops covers the knowledge and opinion on ecophysiology of the major tropical crop plants. The book discusses the fundamental ideas about the numerical description of plant development and considers effects of climatic factors (e.g., temperature, light, and water) on physiological processes in plants. The text also presents an overview of the physical and chemical characteristics of tropical soils. The ecophysiology of the major crop plants, particularly those suitable for the wet tropics, including rice, sugarcane, pineapple, grasslands, root crops, sweet potato, coffee, cacao, rubber, banana, tea, oil palm, coconut palm, citrus, cashew, and mango, is also considered. Plant ecologists, plant physiologists, biochemists, horticulturists, agronomists, meteorologists, soil scientists, food technologists, plant breeders, and people interested in the production of tropical crops will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvested Forages deals with the subject of food for domestic animal feeding. Such food is called "forage" and includes things like alfalfa and other plants usually referred to as "hay." Topics include the ways that this forage is produced, how it is harvested, and ways that it should be stored. Other issues that are dealt with include various criteria and measurement procedures for assessing forage nutritive quality, potential health hazards associated with particular plants and plant toxins, and various issues of plant growth, pest control, and soil fertility--among other topics. This book is essential for any institution with a strong program in range sciences, animal sciences, animal feeding and nutrition, and related programs. - Synthesizes and summarizes a vast and widely dispersed literature in animal science - Serves as a reference for managers of harvested forages as well as all those involved with the forage production industry
