Book excerpt: Limb Land offers a collection of short stories connected by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Presenting a heartfelt, emotional journey, one story details the plight of Army Specialist Spencer, who, while in the ICU of an Iraqi field hospital, requests to see off his detached leg one final time. Hes told policy would not allow him to bid this unusual farewell. Groggy but coherent, he requests his detached leg from another member of personnel, who contemplates the soldiers request. Then theres the story of MPO Dugan Taylor, born into wealth but desiring to serve his country just as his father had in Vietnam. After his face is disfigured by insurgent gunfire, he comes home only to have his temperamental and transient wife walk out on their volatile marriage. A family struggles with a cancer diagnosis; a documentary filmmaker perishes, but leaves a legacy supported by the international film industry. A lieutenant experiences an incredible reunion; one he could not have dreamed possible Limb Land presents heartfelt stories that evoke our gratitude to all who have sacrificed for these wars.
Download or read book Fins into Limbs written by Brian K. Hall and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ago, fish fins evolved into the limbs of land vertebrates and tetrapods. During this transition, some elements of the fin were carried over while new features developed. Lizard limbs, bird wings, and human arms and legs are therefore all evolutionary modifications of the original tetrapod limb. A comprehensive look at the current state of research on fin and limb evolution and development, this volume addresses a wide range of subjects—including growth, structure, maintenance, function, and regeneration. Divided into sections on evolution, development, and transformations, the book begins with a historical introduction to the study of fins and limbs and goes on to consider the evolution of limbs into wings as well as adaptations associated with specialized modes of life, such as digging and burrowing. Fins into Limbs also discusses occasions when evolution appears to have been reversed—in whales, for example, whose front limbs became flippers when they reverted to the water—as well as situations in which limbs are lost, such as in snakes. With contributions from world-renowned researchers, Fins into Limbs will be a font for further investigations in the changing field of evolutionary developmental biology.

Book Synopsis Aboriginal Customary Law: A Source of Common Law Title to Land by : Ulla Secher
Download or read book Aboriginal Customary Law: A Source of Common Law Title to Land written by Ulla Secher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described as 'ground-breaking' in Kent McNeil's Foreword, this book develops an alternative approach to conventional Aboriginal title doctrine. It explains that aboriginal customary law can be a source of common law title to land in former British colonies, whether they were acquired by settlement or by conquest or cession from another colonising power. The doctrine of Common Law Aboriginal Customary Title provides a coherent approach to the source, content, proof and protection of Aboriginal land rights which overcomes problems arising from the law as currently understood and leads to more just results. The doctrine's applicability in Australia, Canada and South Africa is specifically demonstrated. While the jurisprudential underpinnings for the doctrine are consistent with fundamental common law principles, the author explains that the Australian High Court's decision in Mabo provides a broader basis for the doctrine: a broader basis which is consistent with a re-evaluation of case-law from former British colonies in Africa, as well as from the United States, New Zealand and Canada. In this context, the book proffers a reconceptualisation of the Crown's title to land in former colonies and a reassessment of conventional doctrines, including the doctrine of tenure and the doctrine of continuity. 'With rare exceptions ... the existing literature does not probe as deeply or question fundamental assumptions as thoroughly as Dr Secher does in her research. She goes to the root of the conceptual problems around the legal nature of Indigenous land rights and their vulnerability to extinguishment in the former colonial empire of the Crown. This book is a formidable contribution that I expect will be influential in shifting legal thinking on Indigenous land rights in progressive new directions.' I think Mr. O’Neil sent two of his guys here yesterday to stake out you and your land. They came back out here before dawn and started this fire. Yup, I have no doubt, but proving it will be a challenge because we are up against the big boys.” The Land Grab is the story of Alfred Swallow and his Lower Brule Lakota family as they fend off attempts to take their land. In 1929 Alfred is eleven years old and has many responsibilities not expected of a young boy. His Lalá (grandfather), has instilled in his grandson many Lakota traditions which Alfred respects, but at times struggles to understand the message they convey. Young Alfred draws from his tradition when an unscrupulous U.S. Land Agent, who knows the value of the family’s land, is determined to grab their land with intimidation and force. The family and their neighbors band together to stop the unlawful actions, but can they stop a determined criminal?

Book Synopsis Sacrificial Limbs by : Salih Can Aciksoz
Download or read book Sacrificial Limbs written by Salih Can Aciksoz and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrificial Limbs chronicles the everyday lives and political activism of disabled veterans of Turkey’s Kurdish war, one of the most volatile conflicts in the Middle East. Through nuanced ethnographic portraits, Açiksöz examines how veterans’ experiences of war and disability are closely linked to class, gender, and ultimately the embrace of ultranationalist right-wing politics. Bringing the reader into military hospitals, commemorations, political demonstrations, and veterans’ everyday spaces of care, intimacy, and activism, Sacrificial Limbs provides a vivid analysis of the multiple and sometimes contradictory forces that fashion veterans’ bodies, political subjectivities, and communities. It is essential reading for students and scholars interested in anthropology, masculinity, and disability.
