Book excerpt: Life Space Management is a book that throws up a new concept of enhancing individual & organisational effectiveness by managing the parameters of Life Space, a word coined by Kurt Lewin. Our entire effectiveness in life depends on how well we create space with others in the environment. All of us intrinsically yet unknowingly practice the art of creating the right space, whenever we interact with others. Our entire relationship blooms and grows or diminishes based on the quantum of life space we create with them. The author has researched on this new subject and put across his views to help the reader evolve and grow more effective in life.

Book excerpt: John Friedmann is internationally known for his pathbreaking work in urban and regional development planning theory. Life Space and Economic Space contains some of his most original and controversial essays on spatial and territorial development in the low-income countries of the world. The essays focus on a conflict he considers fundamental to human existence: that conflict between life space and economic space. By "life space" Friedmann means the bounded territories over which we strive to exert some degree of self-governance and which constitute the human habitat. By "economic space" he means the ubiquitous global space of market relations. Friedman demonstrates the implications of his theoretical position in a number of ways: he examines development in Southeast Asia, introduces the notion of "world cities, " and presents a politico-territorial model of rural development which he calls agropolitan. The analysis extends in wide-ranging fashion from the space of global relations to the most intimate space of the household economy which, when linked to other households, constitutes the economy of the barrio or neighborhood. In a chapter proposing a dual-track model of development, he sketches a model of the barrio economy drawn from Latin American experience and based on social mobilization, collective self-empowerment and political action. Friedmann perceives a global crisis which he traces to the dissolution of territorial relations. This he believes results from penetration of the global system of markets into the remotest corners of the world, undermining traditional cultures and ways of life. The consequence is incipient breakdown, he asserts, and we need to repoliticize spaceand subordinate the power of capital to the collective will of people organized to work toward common ends. This deliberately provocative collection of essays includes an autobiographical fragment providing contextual information about the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as -re-education- with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors of this volume are committed to the philosophy of treating emotionally disturbed children in the life milieu. Both have been intensely involved in training "online" therapists--child care workers. They are convinced that there is no one "right way" in milieu treatment, and propose a electric model for treatment. Like many of the other writers included in this book, Whittaker and Trieschman conceive of treatment as a total life experience. Th ey do not see the individual versus the group, but the individual within the group situation. They also do not see permissiveness versus limitations, professional staff versus nonprofessional staff , or the institution versus an outside of the community. The book is divided into two sections: the fi rst is a dialogue between the editors on current issues in residential treatment and problems in treating children. The second is a collection of readings. This is one of the first sourcebooks covering the therapeutic milieu for children in residential treatment centers, specifi cally emotionally disturbed children. It is also an excellent text for courses on the emotionally disturbed child, milieu treatment, and child welfare.

Book excerpt: Among other revolutionary developments of today's world is the so-called "knowledge explosion". So much is being written so fast about so many things that it is becoming well-nigh ir--retrievable. One consequently can never be sure that he knows what there is to know about many kinds of phenomena or types of problems existing in the modern world due to the chance that something exists in written form that simply cannot be found, so bulky is the load of literature. The common idea that only the sick child, and never the well, needs special emotional supports and helps from the adult is simply an error. For the well child is not immune from pile-ups of severe emotional intensity when overwhelmed by confusion and conflicts from within. Certainly, the normal kid can be ex--pected to handle such crises either from within or without better than his sick peer on the average, but that does not mean always; and the critical issue for the well child is: is he ready at the time they hit? If not, he needs, quite unmistakably, emotional first aid from the adult - parent, teacher, camp counsellor (or what have you) - who is in charge of his life at that moment. The reader will find that what the authors describe in The Other 23 Hours as the everyday requirement diet, as far as child handling is concerned for their disturbed children, is transferable to the normal crises of normal child--hood.

Academic research by economists, educators, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists has made the study of careers in organizations an important interdisciplinary focus in the social sciences. This proliferation of materials has resulted from a growing concern with such career issues as quality of life, job opportunities for minorities and women, economic downturns, career mobility, and the changing success ethic. This annotated bibliography, first published in 1983, seeks to bring together in a single volume significant academic research from various disciplines.
