Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Sketches and Experience Fob a few years past, I have thought of writing a sketch of my life. But the task seemed too laborious, as I had kept no journal; so I would banish the idea from my mind. Still, at times, the same thought would return again. Then I would ponder it over like this: Time is so short, the Lord may probably come before I could finish it, and then the time and labor would all be lost. Again: supposing I should have the time, and it was all pre pared for publication; how would I obtain the means to publish it? And, if 1 did, what good would it do? What benefit would it be, for any to read a sketch of my life-experiences, - my sorrows, temptations, and trials The answer not being satis factory, I would again dismiss the thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Sketches: Ancestry, Early Life, Christian Experience, and Extensive Labors, of Elder James White, and His Wife, Mrs. Ellen G. White IN the preparation of these pages for the reading public, the honor and glory of God have been in view. The facts presented in this work are evidence that the hand of God has been in the rise and progress of the cause espoused by S. D. Adventists, an outline of which is here given. It has been embarrassing to make prominent on almost every page the lives and labors of those whose names appear on the title page. But their connection with the work has been so close from its very commencement, that the history of the cause is, in a great degree, their history. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Sketches, or Pleasant Reminiscences, of a Busy Career Spent Among All Classes and Conditions of People in the United States and Canada This series of Sketches appeared a few years Since in the N ewtown, L. I., Register, and at the re quest Of many friends is now printed, with a few Changes, in a separate volume. It reveals some note worthy incidents in the path of my experience on health, adventure, athletics, character and morals - in fact is largely a picture of my own life - one quite in formal, and sufficiently off-hand to give Nature health ful room without wounding her with malicious indiffer ence. The reader will see that in many places I lay special stress upon the curative properties of cold, pure, dry air; and I am obliged to do so because most people forget the worth' Of this grandest of all tonics. And another thing the reader may see - I never failed to keep up my confidence in human nature. A man can never realize the full worth of life till he does this. As a Spectator on this beautiful little planet, one arriving at my age has the prerogative of knowing something, and should not be afraid to speak it. The shackles Of creed or dogma have no place in my mental furniture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With a few exceptions, written automatically by the hand of Dr. John C. Grinnell, of Newport, R. I., in the summer and au tumn of 1869 in the presence of the undersigned. Those with an asterisk, were obtained in Feb 1870, in the same way. During the process of writing the medium was generally in his normal state of mind excepting that a mist was thrown by sp111t power over his Vision, so that he was unable to decipher what was indited, that, as was alleged, the matter might not be af fected by the action of his own mind. The sketches taken exceed fifteen hundred in all, (a portion of which are reserved for afuture edition) and with the exception of those otherwise designated, purport to have been written under the control and direction of the spirit of the late Stephen B. Chase, of Newport, R. I., who was a man of a true and noble nature, and that of a Narragansett Indian, whose proper name was Opplahehota, but was called 'shanky by the whites, from his speed of foot. A sketch of Chase's earth character and spirit condition as seen from the after-life as well as that of the Indian's and medium's, will be found under their appropriate lettering, and I think their are all correctly given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. The author of these pages would say, that not until recently were they contemplated, and this only by the desire of friends, who urgently requested that something of the kind be written by me. As I had kept no journal of my life-experience, I have had to depend upon my memory in giving this narrative. I have given only a glimpse of the way along down to the present time. The goodness of God has been manifested during all my life, and I wish it might have been more set forth in these pages. This I have attempted to show: the special care that God has for those who trust him, and do his will. Also the regard he has for the accomplishment of his word, and the keeping of his promises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
