Book excerpt: During his long life Robert M. T. Hunter was present from Thomas Jefferson's founding of the University of Virginia, through Jackson's destruction of the national bank, tariffs, the Mexican War, the Oregon border dispute, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas- Nebraska Act, state's rights, secession, Civil War, slavery, emancipation, Reconstruction, Readjustment, and post-war racial relations until the era of Grover Cleveland. Hunter's strength as a politician on the national level rose from his moderate positions on the public issues of the day apart from slavery for which he was an unapologetic fervent supporter. He failed to achieve the dream of becoming President owing to his mutually destructive rivalry with fellow Virginian Henry A. Wise, and to his strong defense of slavery and white racial superiority that never wavered in his lifetime. Once a man with a brilliant future his choices led him instead to personal and professional tragedy. In the histories of the era Hunter makes constant brief appearances at critical moments, and then disappears off stage, only to re-appear later. For the Civil War reader Hunter is found everywhere and nowhere at the same time, usually reading a snippet about what he said or did before and during the war. A constant presence in the books, today he remains an enigma. This is in part because he allowed opportunities to pass him by, and in part because he left little in the way of a written record, and what he left is almost illegible. As he was a product of his birthplace and time, his ardent defense of the indefensible institution of slavery may have cost him a shot at the Presidency and brought him untold tragedy. Perhaps he should best be remembered for confirming what most people already accept, that the Civil War was caused by slavery alone. But even so, many of his speeches still speak to us today on tariffs, immigration, economics, class conflict, religious discrimination, and the role of government. This book is an effort to bring the real man to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thoroughly researched . . . [Hubbard's] interpretation is solid, well supported, and touches all of the major aspects of Confederate diplomacy."--American Historical Review "As the first examination of the topic since King Cotton Diplomacy (1931), this work deserves widespread attention. Hubbard offers a convincingly bleak portrayal of the limited skills and myopic vision of Rebel diplomacy at home and abroad."--Virginia Magazine of History and Biography Of the many factors that contributed to the South's loss of the Civil War, one of the most decisive was the failure of Southern diplomacy. In this penetrating work, Charles M. Hubbard reassesses the diplomatic efforts made by the Confederacy in its struggle to become an independent nation. Hubbard focuses both on the Confederacy's attempts to negotiate a peaceful separation from the Union and Southern diplomats' increasingly desperate pursuit of state recognition from the major European powers. Drawing on a large body of sources, Hubbard offers an important reinterpretation of the problems facing Confederate diplomats. He demonstrates how the strategies and objectives of the South's diplomatic program--themselves often poorly conceived--were then placed in the hands of inexperienced envoys who were ill-equipped to succeed in their roles as negotiators. The Author: Charles M. Hubbard is associate professor of history at Lincoln Memorial University and executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Museum in Harrogate, Tennessee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading politicians, diplomats, clerics, planters, farmers, manufacturers, and merchants preached a transformative, world-historical role for the Confederacy, persuading many of their compatriots to fight not merely to retain what they had but to gain their future empire. Impervious to reality, their vision of future world leadership—territorial, economic, political, and cultural—provided a vitally important, underappreciated motivation to form an independent Confederate republic. In Colossal Ambitions, Adrian Brettle explores how leading Confederate thinkers envisioned their postwar nation—its relationship with the United States, its place in the Americas, and its role in the global order. Brettle draws on rich caches of published and unpublished letters and diaries, Confederate national and state government documents, newspapers published in North America and England, conference proceedings, pamphlets, contemporary and scholarly articles, and more to engage the perspectives of not only modern historians but some of the most salient theorists of the Western World in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. An impressive and complex undertaking, Colossal Ambitions concludes that while some Confederate commentators saw wartime industrialization as pointing toward a different economic future, most Confederates saw their society as revolving once more around coercive labor, staple crop production, and exports in the war’s wake.
