Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Vol. 3 Napoleon on leaving Schonbrunn returned to France by way of Munich, where he waited for the ratification of the treaty by Austria. TO convey the intelligence as soon as possible, military posts were placed on the heights at certain distances, who were to give the signal by white flags in the day and by bonfires kindled at night. The news of the ratification came the third day of the Emperor's stay at the capital of Bavaria. He set out next day for Fontainebleau, where he arrived a few hours before the Em press, who had left Strasburg for Paris a month before.. There were marks of uneasiness on her countenance and an appearance of constraint in 'napolepn's behavior to her. She was alarmed at the circumstance of the private communication between her room and the Emperor's having been shut Up. They returned to Paris on the 14th of November, where the presence of the King of Sax ony sometimes relieved the awkwardness of a téte c'z téte but it was easy to remark a considerable alteration in the features of the Empress and a silent reserve on the part of the Emperor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French, Vol. 3 of 3: With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution The Empe'ror Napoleon received that declaration of war, with the calmness of one by whom it had been for some time expected. It was better, he said, to have a declared enemy than a doubtful ally. By the Prussians at large it was heard with all the rapture of gratified hope, and the sacrifices which they made, not willingly only, but eagerly, show more completely than any thing else can, the general hatred against France, and the feelings which that nation had excited during her career of success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon, when about ten years of age, was sent to the military school of Brienne, his parents having destined him for the profession of arms - a profession at that time, in conse quence of a prejudice still too prevalent, viewed as peculiarly the pursuit of a noble and gene rous mind. Forty years afterwards he spoke of his parting from his mother, upon the occasion referred to, ' as having been particularly bitter and painful to his feelings. Brienne school, although of a military character, was somewhat inconsistently placed under the superintend ence of a few monks, and regulated, in many respects, upon monastic principles. Each pupil was locked up at night in a solitary cell, the whole furniture of which consisted of a bed, an iron water-pitcher, and a basin. Napoleon became much attached to this school. I was happy at Brienne, was an expression which frequently dropped from his lips, when seated on the throne of empire. (of IV.) by William Milligan Sloane The key to Napoleon's dealings with Poland is to be found in his strategy; his political policy never passed beyond the first tentative stages, for he never conquered either Russia or Poland. The struggle upon which he was next to enter was a contest, not for Russian abasement but for Russian friendship in the interest of his far-reaching continental system. Poland was simply one of his weapons against the Czar. Austria was steadily arming; Francis received the quieting assurance that his share in the partition was to be undisturbed. In the general and proper sorrow which has been felt for the extinction of Polish nationality by three vulture neighbors, the terrible indictment of general worthlessness which was justly brought against her organization and administration is at most times and by most people utterly forgotten. A people has exactly the nationality, government, and administration which expresses its quality and secures its deserts. The Poles were either dull and sluggish boors or haughty and elegant, pleasure-loving nobles. Napoleon and his officers delighted in the life of Warsaw, but he never appears to have respected the Poles either as a whole or in their wrangling cliques; no doubt he occasionally faced the possibility of a redeemed Poland, but in general the suggestion of such a consummation served his purpose and he went no further. That he had no sentiment about Polish nationality is self-evident. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon, Vol. 1 The life OF napoleon buonaparte, my father's last, largest, and, upon the whole, greatest work, has been for some years out of print, but it is only recently that I have been able to trace the ownership of the copyright. This knowledge obtained, and the work having been placed at my entire disposal by the kind ness of the gentleman who held the property, it is with great gratification that I now issue a new edition of this important history, at a price which will place it within the means of thousands to whom its former cost rendered the purchase altogether impracticable. The great object of my ambition, the diffusion of my father's fame, is thus eminently promoted. My revi sion of the text has been, of course, limited to such corrections as occurred to me of names, dates, and figures, and even in these respects I have had very little to do.
