Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spurgeon points people to their faith in God for finding joy in life. Spurgeon said “I am the subject of depressions of spirit so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of misery as I go to, but I always get back again by this—I know I trust Christ. I have no reliance but in him, and if he falls I shall fall with him, but if he does not, I shall not. Because he lives, I shall live also, and I spring to my legs again and fight with my depression of spirit and my melancholy, and get the victory through it. So may you, and so you must, for there is no other way of escaping from it. In your most depressed seasons you are to get joy and peace through believing.” The twenty-one chapters are excerpts of sermons that have to do with joy and hope in Christ. The text is updated to modern language.

Book excerpt: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. – 1 Peter 4:13 Child of God, do not say that the sun is quenched because the cloud has hidden it. No! It is behind there, preparing summer for you, for when it comes out again, it will have made the clouds ready to drop in April showers, all of them mothers of the sweet May flowers. Above all, when your God hides His face, do not say that He has forgotten you. He is only tarrying a little while to make you love Him better. When He comes, you will have joy in the Lord and will rejoice with joy unspeakable (1 Peter 1:8). Waiting exercises our grace. Waiting tests our faith. Therefore, wait in hope, for although the promise tarries, it can never come too late. We never have such close dealings with God as when we are in tribulation. When the barn is full, we can live without God. When the safe is bursting with gold, we somehow can do without as much prayer. But once your gourds have been taken away (Jonah 4), you want your God. Once the idols are cleansed away out of the house, then you must go and honor the Lord. God does not afflict willingly, nor grieve us for nothing, but He does so out of love and affection. He knows that if He leaves us unchastised, we will bring upon ourselves misery ten thousand times greater than we will suffer by His slight rebukes and the gentle blows of His hand. He is admonishing you, not punishing you. He is correcting you in measure, not smiting you in wrath. There is no angry displeasure in His heart. Even though His brow may be ruffled, there is no anger in Him toward you. Even though His eye may have closed upon you, He does not hate you. He still loves you. - Charles H. Spurgeon

Book excerpt: The world of all-star cheerleading stretches beyond the imagination of a "normal" human being. Misunderstood by most, all-star cheerleading has become one of the fastest growing "industries" in the past decade. We don't cheer for football, we don't cheer for basketball, the only thing we cheer for is our teammates standing next to us. A world full of scandal, drama, drug and alcohol usage, cut-throat tactics, heartache, defeat and the adrenaline rush you feel while performing the two and a half minute routine. This is my story as a level five all-star cheerleader and coach. I take you on my journey to show you what really happens behind closed doors and what happens from the athlete's point of view. I show you why all-star cheerleading has become my biggest weakness and my constant struggle. Step into my world and experience the emotions and struggles that is my never ending addiction and how it has changed my life forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irving Berlin (1888–1989) was unable to read or write music and could only play the piano in the key of F-sharp major; yet, for the first half of the twentieth century he was America's most successful and most representative songwriter, composing such hits as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Cheek to Cheek," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "White Christmas," "Anything You Can Do," "There's No Business Like Show Business," and "God Bless America." As Thousands Cheer, winner of the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award, explores with precision and sensitivity Berlin's long, prolific career; his self-doubt and late-blooming misanthropy; and the tyrannical control he exerted over his legacy of song. From his immigrant beginnings through Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood to his reclusive and bitter final years, this definitive biography reveals the man who wrote 1500 songs but could never quash the fear that, for all his success, he wasn't quite good enough.

There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook. First there was the car accident--two girls dead after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know his reasons. Monica's sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they'd lost. That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it's not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica's world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad's desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn't over. Some people in town know more than they're saying. And somehow, Monica is at the center of it all. There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn't mean anyone else is safe. Book excerpt: Rebecca is much like any other teenager girl. She is beautiful, full of energy and she wants to be a cheerleader when she grows up. Having been on cheer for most of her life making the varsity team was a dream come true, but it is what she must do to maintain that dream that starts to break Rebecca's spirit. The girls must weigh in every week and must maintain a certain weight to cheer. If they are overweight the things, they are willing to do to their bodies to lose the weight within the twenty-four hours given by their coach is unspeakable. When Rebecca finds herself starved, high on meth and running in the middle of the night the only thing she wants is her mother. She calls for her, cries for her and by the time her mother finds her in the middle of the street Rebecca's dreams of cheering are over along with her life. It is not until the near end that we realize that it is the spirit of Rebecca that is telling us this tragic story. In the end she visits her own funeral, and she always comes to see her mother who was the strongest woman that she knew and now she has to find the strength to move forward without her little girl.
