Book Synopsis Dickens and the Politics of the Family by : Catherine Waters
Download or read book Dickens and the Politics of the Family written by Catherine Waters and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fictional representation of the family has long been regarded as a Dickensian speciality. But while nineteenth-century reviewers praised Dickens as the pre-eminent novelist of the family, any close examination of his novels reveals a remarkable disjunction between his image as the quintessential celebrant of the hearth, and his interest in fractured families. Catherine Waters offers an explanation of this discrepancy through an examination of Dickens's representation of the family in relation to nineteenth-century constructions of class and gender. Drawing upon feminist and new historicist methodologies, and focusing upon the normalising function of middle-class domestic ideology, Waters concludes that Dickens's novels record a shift in notions of the family away from an earlier stress upon the importance of lineage and blood towards a new ideal of domesticity assumed to be the natural form of the family.

You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

"Our cab only drove up half an hour ago. I feel almostnew myself yet.""So do I, and horribly in the blues too," said Pauline Reynolds. "We know Pauline'ssymptoms only too well: the first day she shows aggressively red eyes and a damp pockethandkerchief; the second day she writes lengthy letters home, begging to be allowed to returnimmediately and have lessons with a private governess; the third day she wanders about, trying to getsympathy from anyone who is weak-minded enough to listen to her, till in desperation somebodydrags her into the playground, and makes her have a round at hockey. That cheers her up, and shebegins to think life isn't quite such a desert. By the fourth morning she has recovered her spirits, andcome to the conclusion that Chessington College is a very decent kind of place; and she begins to bealarmed lest her mother, on the strength of the pathetic letter, should have decided to let her leave atonce, and should have already engaged a private governess."
