Book excerpt: For visitors to the Martin's Cove historic site in Wyoming, Patience Loader has become an icon of the disastrous winter entrapment of the Martin and Willie handcart companies. Her record of those events is important, but there is much else of interest in her autobiography. In fact, it is a bit unusual that someone such as her would have left such an engaging record of her life. The daughter of an English gardener, Patience Loader became a boarding house servant, domestic maid, and seamstress. Converted to Mormonism, she shipped with her parents to America. They joined the ill-fated Martin company, which because of poor planning and a late start west, was caught poorly prepared by severe high plains snowstorms in October and November 1856. The combined fatalities of the Martin and Willie companies made this the worst disaster in the history of overland travel. Patience = s father was one of those who died. After reaching Utah, Patience took the unusual step for a Mormon of marrying a soldier, John Rozsa, stationed at Camp Floyd. The troops there had made up the Utah Expedition, sent to ensure federal authority over the Mormons. Rozsa was a Hungarian immigrant and Mormon convert. When the Utah troops were recalled for the Civil War, Patience accompanied her husband, as an army laundress, to Washington, D.C., running a boarding house while Rozsa fought. After the war, he died at Fort Leavenworth of consumption, and Patience returned alone to Utah, where she became a cook at a mining camp in American Fork Canyon. Her autobiography ends there in 1872, though she lived till 1922.

French Revolutionary symbolism, socialist critiques of industrialism, American Indian nationalism, and Wilsonian internationalism all became the raw materials of Mormon millennial theologies which were sometimes barely distinguishable from secular utopianism. Many Mormon thinkers accepted secular revolutionary arguments that the old world order needed to be destroyed, not merely reformed, to clear the way for the new. In From Above and Below, author Craig Livingston tells the story of Mormon commentary on global revolutions from the European revolutions of 1848 to the collapse of Mormon faith in progress in the 1930s when revolutionary communist and fascist regimes exposed themselves as violent and repressive. As the Church bureaucratized and assimilated to mainstream American and capitalist values, Mormons became champions of the conservative view of political and social development for which they are known today. They arrived in what is now Utah the following year and established a new Zion in the wilderness. Nine years later, fearing a federal invasion, Young and other Mormon leaders debated how to bring thousands of impoverished European converts, mostly British and Scandinavian, from the Old World to Zion. Young conceived of a plan in which the European Mormons would travel by ship to New York City and by train to Iowa City. From there, instead of crossing the plains by covered wagon, they would push and pull wooden handcarts all the way to Salt Lake. But the plan was badly flawed and the food provisions were woefully inadequate as the travelers navigated the handcarts across plains and mountains for 1,300 miles. Five companies left Iowa that spring and summer, but the last two left late. As a consequence, some 900 Mormons were caught in early snowstorms in Wyoming. When the church leadership in Salt Lake became aware of the dire circumstances, Young launched a heroic rescue effort. But for more than 200 of the immigrants, the rescue came too late. This story has never before been told in full despite its stunning human drama: At least five times as many people died in the Mormon handcart tragedy than in the more famous Donner Party disaster. Book excerpt: Seventy-six original letters and transcriptions of seventy-seven letters (transcribed by Joan Jaques Sextro, great-great granddaughter of John Clarke Jaques) documenting in detail John Clarke Jaques' land/sea voyage to San Francisco and his experience as a miner in various locations in California between 1849 and 1852. The letters are mostly addressed to Jaques' wife, Susan, and sent in care of John Dikeman (Susan's father) in Brooklyn, New York. The letters begin in June 1849 , first documenting John Clarke Jaques' trip via steamer to Panama, his journey across the Isthmus, and his voyage via steamer to San Francisco. Included are two drawings by Jaques of his trip by donkey across the Isthmus. The letters continue in September and October 1849 from Mormon Island and Coloma, California. Between November 1849 and July 1850, Jaques is writing to his wife from San Francisco. By August 1850, he is in Middle Fork of the American River and in Georgetown. Between September 28, 1850 and January 10, 1851, he is writing again from San Francisco. During most of 1851, Jaques is in a range of places in the gold country, including Spanish Dry Diggings, Middle Fork, Shinanigan Bar, and Canion Creek. By November 23, 1851, Jaques is at Yankee Jim's Dry Diggings in Placer County. Jaques dies at Yankee Jim's Dry Diggings on May 23, 1852. The final letter in the collection, from a man named Achilles Wilkerson, provides Jaques' wife with the details of her husband's last days and his death.

He was part of a Mormon family relocating to "Zion" for both religious and economic reasons. The young man, suffering from malaria and extreme food shortages in the Martin Handcart Company, abandoned his family and spent a winter with a compassionate Indian family that saved him from starvation. Soon after, at Fort Laramie, Harrison served as a civilian cook for an army surgeon. He accompanied troops during the march into Salt Lake City in 1858 and cooked at Camp Floyd. Upon the camp's closure in 1861, he cooked at an Overland Stage and Pony Express station. George Harrison subsequently worked as a freighter and served in the Black Hawk War. In mid-life he built a small restaurant and hotel in Springville, Utah. Harrison's cooking, singing, and story telling attracted "drummers" (traveling salesmen) who gave the restaurateur the name of "Beefsteak" because of the quality of his steaks.
