Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.

Supporting the directive, the UK government has formulated RTFO policy to implement to reduce the use of fossil fuel by 5% in 2010 and follow the process to obtain the renewable target. Basically, this study focuses on the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of biofuel crops as a source of biofuel, such as biodiesel and bioethanol to be used in transportation sectors to meet the renewable target by reducing the GHG emissions and imports of fossil fuel. The subject of the study also gives an overview of the comparative study of the impacts of growing biofuel crops in Nepal and in the UK on environmental and socio-economic issues, like impacts on land, water, biodiversity, and food and energy security. At the outcome of the study, will it be helpful to coin similar model to RTFO in Nepal and gives hint how the model is unfair to implement in Nepal.

Book excerpt: Climate change and increased energy demand have led to the search for alternative sources of energy with low or no global warming potential (GWP). Energy crops are a promising alternative to fossil fuels for a renewable energy future. Both poplar trees and switchgrass are attractive options for perennial energy crops for biofuel production. In this study, a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used to evaluate three agricultural systems. These systems are monoculture poplar trees (PM), monoculture switchgrass (SM), and switchgrass intercropping with poplar trees (IC), grown for ethanol production in an irrigated farm in northeastern Oregon. The objective of this study was using LCA "from cradle to gate": (i) to determine the carbon footprint (CF) of poplar and switchgrass production in monoculture and intercropping systems, and (ii) to assess the energy efficiency of these crops in the systems. The results indicate the CF per unit energy produced and net energy productivity were improved in the intercrop system compared to monoculture of either poplar trees or switchgrass. Although the CF for IC was 160% more than PM and 15% more than SM in CO2 eq ha-1, CF was 5% less than PM and 42% less than SM in CO2 eq MJ-1. In fact, when biomass C was accounted in the CF, all systems have a negative CF. The IC system also contributed to increased energy efficiency compared to monoculture systems, as the energy efficiency ratio was 1.8, 2.0, and 2.9 for PM, SM, and IC respectively. Irrigation, equipment, and fertilizers were the most dominant factors in the systems’ environmental impacts. Assessment indicated the potential of increasing the net energy ratio and reducing CF of bioenergy crops by choosing the most energy efficient and water efficient irrigation system, replacing fossil fuels used in field operations with renewable fuels, and using efficient methods for soil fertilization and enrichment. However even without further improvement, all three biofuel crop systems were net energy producers.

Unlike carbon capture and storage technologies that remove carbon dioxide emissions directly from large point sources such as coal power plants, NETs remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or enhance natural carbon sinks. Storing the carbon dioxide from NETs has the same impact on the atmosphere and climate as simultaneously preventing an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. To address this need, Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda assesses the benefits, risks, and "sustainable scale potential" for NETs and sequestration. This report also defines the essential components of a research and development program, including its estimated costs and potential impact.

Book excerpt: Life cycle analysis (LCA) allows for evaluation of the environmental costs of production systems from creation to disposal. Many LCA studies are available for various renewable energy production systems, however, there is a need for LCAs that quantify the benefits of energy coproduction systems. Coproduction systems refer to a partnership of energy production systems that reciprocate waste products in a mutually beneficial way, thereby decreasing waste streams and offsetting input streams from both systems. This study evaluates how biomass crop coproduction with an anaerobic digestion (AD) system affects the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and material waste streams relative to standalone bioenergy systems. A literature meta-analysis was used to collect life cycle inventories, emissions, and cost for: 1) Advanced biofuel production from perennial grass, 2) Biogas production from AD. The reduction in emissions due to coproduction was 0.28 kgCO2eq per kWh electricity produced. Life cycle impacts were most influenced by the following categories: facility construction, harvest and lignin use, transportation and biorefinery, and effluent, fertilizer, and soil. The cost for coproduction of biogas from food waste and bioethanol from perennial grass was reduced by 10.8% and 7.0%, respectively, when compared to the cost for individually managed systemsts.
