Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Work of Duncan McLaren, Vol. 2 Mr. McLaren's active participation in the Anti-Com-Law agitation made his name almost as well known in political circles in England as it was in Scotland. When he went to London on League business in 1842, he was in correspondence with Lord Brougham, probably the most distinguished amongst the statesmen and jurists who had left Scotland for the wider sphere of English public life. To this period belongs the following note, dated Tuesday, 8th February 1842: - "The Edinburgh Conference petition id will be presented in the House of Lords this evening soon after five. If Mr. McLaren wishes to be present, and will come then. Lord Brougham will take care to have him admitted below the bar." Lord Brougham did not cooperate with the League, and was opposed to, rather than a supporter of, the thoroughgoing nature of its policy; but he welcomed Mr. McLaren as a citizen of Edinburgh whose work and character had gained his esteem, with whom he had held confidential political correspondence, and who, in former years, had engaged his humanitarian sympathies in the cause of Prison Reform in Scotland. Book excerpt: The future of humanity is urban, and the nature of urban space enables, and necessitates, sharing -- of resources, goods and services, experiences. Yet traditional forms of sharing have been undermined in modern cities by social fragmentation and commercialization of the public realm. In Sharing Cities, Duncan McLaren and Julian Agyeman argue that the intersection of cities' highly networked physical space with new digital technologies and new mediated forms of sharing offers cities the opportunity to connect smart technology to justice, solidarity, and sustainability. McLaren and Agyeman explore the opportunities and risks for sustainability, solidarity, and justice in the changing nature of sharing. McLaren and Agyeman propose a new "sharing paradigm," which goes beyond the faddish "sharing economy" -- seen in such ventures as Uber and TaskRabbit -- to envision models of sharing that are not always commercial but also communal, encouraging trust and collaboration. Detailed case studies of San Francisco, Seoul, Copenhagen, Medellín, Amsterdam, and Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) contextualize the authors' discussions of collaborative consumption and production; the shared public realm, both physical and virtual; the design of sharing to enhance equity and justice; and the prospects for scaling up the sharing paradigm though city governance. They show how sharing could shift values and norms, enable civic engagement and political activism, and rebuild a shared urban commons. Their case for sharing and solidarity offers a powerful alternative for urban futures to conventional "race-to-the-bottom" narratives of competition, enclosure, and division.

Book excerpt: Evelyn Waugh's own life often provided inspiration for his fiction and equally often the experiences he was writing about were far from joyful. Vile Bodies and A Handful of Dirt grew out of heartache. Beginning with his own personal obsession with 'Decline and Fall', the author embarks on a real journey to many of the key places in Evelyn Waugh's life, discovering along the way new insights into the triangular relationship between Waugh, his wife and the man she left him for. McKaren charts the way Waugh's life feeds into his novels in a biography that is as surprising and funny as Waugh's own work"--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This book is a study of the best-selling writer for children Enid Blyton (1897-1968) and provides a new account of her career. It draws on Blyton’s business correspondence to give a fresh account of a misunderstood figure who for forty years was one of Britain’s most successful and powerful authors. It examines Blyton’s rise to fame in the 1920s and considers the ways in which she managed her career as a storyteller, journalist and magazine editor. There is discussion of her most famous series including the Famous Five, the Secret Seven, Malory Towers and Noddy, but attention is also given to lesser-known works including the family stories she published to acclaim in the 1940s and early 1950s, as well as her attempts to become a dramatist. The book also discusses Blyton’s fluctuating critical reputation, how she and her works were received and how Blyton the person has fared at the hands of biographers and the media.
