SOCIAL LIFE AND RELATIONS OF THE INDIANS. It may be thought that, in a work of this kind, more light might have been thrown upon the social life of the Indians than has been done in the foregoing pages; but it should be borne in mind that the writer was almost entirely ignorant of the different features of Indian life when first going among them, and the little knowledge he may have gained since was incidentally picked up, from time to time, as circumstances brought them to view. These, so far as related to the foregoing narrative, have been mentioned as the work progressed. It should al*o be borne in mind that the work was not designed as a dissertation on Indian manners and customs, but a simple narrative of the life of the writer among them. Yet, as something more particularly relating to these subjects may be generally interesting, a few pages here, in conclusion, will be devoted thereto, -- premising this, that my observations apply only to the Indians of the southwestern Indian Territory, and more particularly to the Kiowas, Comanches, and Apaches. Man, in whatever position he may be found, whether in savage, barbarous, or civilized nations, is pre-eminently 319 a social being. He finds that associated action gives power and leads to success, where individual exertion would be expended for nought. Hence he gathers into clans, tribes, or nations, according to the degree of civilization or associative power attained. Every clan, tiibe, or nation, having its own ends in view, whatever jealousies may exist towards others, must of necessity act in concert in all important matters relating to other tribes or nations. A federally mandated system of English-only instruction played a significant role in dislocating Native people fromøtheir traditional ways of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The effect of this policy, however, was more than another instance of cultural loss-English was transformed by and even empowered many Native students. Drawing on archival documents, autobiography, fiction, and English as a Second Language theory and practice, America's Second Tongue traces the shifting ownership of English as the language was transferred from one population to another and its uses were transformed by Native students, teachers, and writers. How was the English language taught to Native students, and how did they variably reproduce, resist, and manipulate this new way of speaking, writing, and thinking? The perspectives and voices of government officials, missionaries, European American and Native teachers, and the students themselves reveal the rationale for the policy, how it was implemented in curricula, and how students from dozens of different Native cultures reacted differently to being forced to communicate orally and in writing through a uniform foreign language.

Book excerpt: Framed by theories of syncretism and revitalization, Religious Revitalization among the Kiowas examines changes in Kiowa belief and ritual in the final decades of the nineteenth century. During the height of the horse-and-bison culture, Kiowa beliefs were founded in the notion of daudau, a force permeating the universe that was accessible through vision quests. Following the end of the Southern Plains wars in 1875, the Kiowas were confined within the boundaries of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache (Plains Apache) Reservation. As wards of the government, they witnessed the extinction of the bison herds, which led to the collapse of the Sun Dance by 1890. Though prophet movements in the 1880s had failed to restore the bison, other religions emerged to fill the void left by the loss of the Sun Dance. Kiowas now sought daudau through the Ghost Dance, Christianity, and the Peyote religion. Religious Revitalization among the Kiowas examines the historical and sociocultural conditions that spawned the new religions that arrived in Kiowa country at the end of the nineteenth century, as well as Native and non-Native reactions to them. A thorough examination of these sources reveals how resilient and adaptable the Kiowas were in the face of cultural genocide between 1883 and 1933. Although the prophet movements and the Ghost Dance were short-lived, Christianity and the Native American Church have persevered into the twenty-first century. Benjamin R. Kracht shows how Kiowa traditions and spirituality were amalgamated into the new religions, creating a distinctive Kiowa identity.
