Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that the lack of evidence for a strong link between innovation & productivity in Canada is due to incomplete measures of innovation. The authors first construct a comprehensive measure of innovation that models innovation as an unobservable latent variable that underlies four indicators: research & development propensity, measured as a percentage of output; patents per worker; technology adoption, measured as real investment in machinery & equipment; and skill intensity, measured as the employment share of workers with a university education. The authors then examine the relationship between innovation & productivity in 14 Canadian manufacturing industries over 1980-1997 using the new measure. The results also show that the length of time it takes for innovation to have a positive & significant impact on productivity differs across industries.

Book excerpt: L'OBJET DE CETTE THESE EST L'ETUDE DES RELATIONS ENTRE L'INVESTISSEMENT EN RECHERCHE ET DEVELOPPEMENT, L'INNOVATION ET LA PRODUCTIVITE DES ENTREPRISES DE L'INDUSTRIE MANUFACTURIERE FRANCAISE.

Bringing together contemporary innovation pattern theories inspired by the two original patterns developed by Joseph A. Schumpeter, this book develops an innovative new model of long wave aggregate level economic activity. This model is rigorously tested with post-war US manufacturing data, revealing an intriguing correlation between the data and the model. The book examines different theories of technological change, and provides a detailed account of the long wave which makes use of the relevant aspects of these theories, without betraying their main features and messages. These theories are synthesized and shown to be consistent with the development of post-war US manufacturing. Shedding light on the dynamics of the technological advances that have taken place in the last 20 years, economists and students alike will find this volume an invaluable read.

Book excerpt: This paper provides an empirical analysis of the comparative evolution of interprovincial & international trade and their effects on regional growth for the Canadian provinces since 1981. It first establishes the trend in the relationship between the ratios of interprovincial & international trade to gross domestic product, revealing a sharp break that occurred around 1991. The analysis casts doubt on the pure diversion model often used in trade modelling. The second part uses a conditional convergence-growth model to estimate the respective long-run effects of interprovincial & international trade on Canadian regional economies, specifically in relation to productivity, relative gross domestic product per capita, and job creation. The final chapter discusses implications of the results for regional economies & economic policy issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will take the reader through a systematic examination of the factors involved in process innovation, starting with considerations to be initiated in the boardroom and at group management level and developing into a hands-on guide for middle management and professional engineers directly involved in the innovation of process technology. The book initially puts process innovation in a corporate perspective, providing a framework for the development of a corporate process innovation strategy. Some new methodological tools are also introduced which support targeting and proper roadmapping of improved process capabilities and the progression of customer and end-user product demands into raw-material specifications in a well-managed supply and demand chain. Various aspects of the design of a process innovation organisation are reviewed in a later section. In the context of development of process technology, this book advocates the importance of delineating and clarifying corporate work processes for process innovation. Various environments for development work are discussed, from initial test work to pilot-plant testing and the use of demonstration facilities to achieve lean process innovation. The importance of an open collaborative approach is stressed; this includes involving external equipment manufacturers at an early stage as well as collaborative development of customers' use of the products in their production processes, with a view to excellence in future application development. Process innovation will not, however, generate profit or reduce operating costs until the new or improved process technology is operating well in the plant. Best practice for start-up of new process technology and process plants is then examined, starting with a fresh outlook on technology transfer in general. This often-neglected area of management of process innovation is, in fact, of an importance equivalent to that of a product launch in the development of new products. The final part of the book closes the circle, discussing how to implement and measure the strategic intent of process innovation. Improving the general performance of corporate process innovation is then covered by going through success factors and key performance indicators, and their aggregation on a corporate level.

Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the nature of new manufacturing technologies, such as CAD/CAM and robotics, as well as ap propriate methodologies for evaluating whether such technologies are financially and organizationally viable in particular contexts. The chapters included here were commissioned as papers for presen tation at The Wharton Conference on Productivity, Technology, and Organizational Innovation, which took place in Philadelphia on December 8 and 9 of 1983. The conference was sponsored by The University of Pennsylvania's Center for the Study of Organizational Innovation. There has been a surge of interest in the area of manufacturing over the past ten years as managers have come to realize that the operations function is critical to remaining competitive. New status has been given to factory and operations managers. New programs revitalizing manufacturing and distribution have been introduced in organizations. Corporate strategy is now explicitly considering operations and manufacturing functions. And the curricula of leading business schools are reflecting the rapidly advancing research on technology management and manufacturing operations. In spite of these important signs of progress, we are clearly just at the beginning of understanding the issues involved here. The present volume provides a state-of-the-art review of the realities of technology management and manufacturing strategy. As described in the Editor's Introduction, we address four topics: The Nature of New Manufacturing Technology, Innovation and Manufacturing Strategy, Productivity Management, and Technology Management and Organ ization. These issues are clearly very important themes for U.S.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports from an ambitious MIT research project that makes the case for encouraging the colocation of manufacturing and innovation. Production in the Innovation Economy emerges from several years of interdisciplinary research at MIT on the links between manufacturing and innovation in the United States and the world economy. Authors from political science, economics, business, employment and operations research, aeronautics and astronautics, and nuclear engineering come together to explore the extent to which manufacturing is key to an innovative and vibrant economy. Chapters include survey research on gaps in worker skill development and training; discussions of coproduction with Chinese firms and participation in complex manufacturing projects in China; analyses of constraints facing American start-up firms involved in manufacturing; proposals for a future of distributed manufacturing and a focus on product variety as a marker of innovation; and forecasts of powerful advanced manufacturing technologies on the horizon. The chapters show that although the global distribution of manufacturing is not an automatic loss for the United States, gains from the colocation of manufacturing and innovation have not disappeared. The book emphasizes public policy that encourages colocation through, for example, training programs, supplements to private capital, and interfirm cooperation in industry consortia. Such approaches can help the United States not only to maintain manufacturing capacity but also, crucially, to maximize its innovative potential. Contributors Joyce Lawrence, Richard K.
