Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 2 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time Hebrews, meaning strangers from the other side, the men who had crossed the river, the emigrants from Mesopotamia. J our neying through the Syrian desert he tarried for some time at Damas cus, which was then an old city. At Damascus he met his faithful servant Eliezer, whom he created steward of his house. Thence he passed on to the south, crossing the Jordan and entering the Prom ised Land, halting in the valley of Sichem, or Shechem. The Hebrew record goes on to say: And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land; and there builded he an altar unto the Dord, who appeared unto him. Abram proceeded unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east; and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. This country - then called Canaan, from one of Ham's sons, whose descendants had peopled it, and afterwards known as Judasa, and now called Palestine - was inhabited by many idolatrous tribes. Abram settled in the mountain region, where he was secure from the Canaan ites, who dwelt in the more fertile plains below, but where he had but scant pasturage for his cattle. He pushed on farther southward, but was driven by a famine into Egypt. Fearing that the Pharaoh who then reigned over Egypt would be tempted by Sarai's beauty to kill him to get her in his possession, Abram passed her off as his sister. Thinking that she was an unmarried woman, the Egyptian monarch took her to his house, and bestowed wealth and honors upon Abram with a lavish hand. But says the Mosaic account: The Lord plagued Pharoah and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. And Pharoah called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? Why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Why saidst thou, She is my sister? So I might have taken her to me to wife; now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. And Pharoah commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Brahmanism and Buddhism, in other words. Are pantheistic re ligions. What that designation means we shall understand better by tracing the origin and historical development of these religions than by any formal or philosophical definition of the term. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 14 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time; Embracing a General Survey of the Progress of Mankind in National and Social Life, Civil Government, Religion, Literature, Science and Art In Mexico, or New Spain, all offices were in the possession of Euro pean Spaniards; while the Creoles, or Mexican Spaniards, were de prived of all share in the government. The Viceroy of New Spain allowed the Creoles a share in the government, in order to secure their support to Ferdinand VII., the lawful King of Spain. This measure was opposed by the provincial court of the Audiencia, which, siding with the European Spaniards, seized and imprisoned the Viceroy and again deprived the Mexican Creoles of their rights and privileges. These arbitrary proceedings increased the bitterness on the part of the Creoles toward the European Spaniards. On the l6th of September, 1810, the Revolution in Mexico was be gun, in the little town of Dolores, by a priest named Hidalgo. The insurrection spread with wonderful rapidity, and Hidalgo soon had one hundred thousand men under arms. With this immense force, Hidalgo advanced toward the city of Mexico and gained some victories, but soon made a hasty and unaccountable retreat. Hidalgo gained some victories during the latter part of the same year, 1810, but tarnished his glory by his atrocities. The number of; Spaniards put to death by his orders amounted to several thousand. After being defeated several times, Hidalgo was taken prisoner, and was shot by order of the Spanish authorities, in July, 1811. After the death of Hidalgo, Morelos, a warlike pirest, who was as generous as brave, gained many brilliant victories over the Spaniards, during the years 1811 and 1812; but he was defeated, captured and shot in 1813. Book excerpt: This book explores and explains the reasons why the idea of universal history, a form of teleological history which holds that all peoples are travelling along the same path and destined to end at the same point, persists in political thought. Prominent in Western political thought since the middle of the eighteenth century, the idea of universal history holds that all peoples can be situated in the narrative of history on a continuum between a start and an end point, between the savage state of nature and civilized modernity. Despite various critiques, the underlying teleological principle still prevails in much contemporary thinking and policy planning, including post-conflict peace-building and development theory and practice. Anathema to contemporary ideals of pluralism and multiculturalism, universal history means that not everyone gets to write their own story, only a privileged few. For the rest, history and future are taken out of their hands, subsumed and assimilated into other people’s narrative.
