Book excerpt: "A reminder that sometimes, there is a good reason to break the rules. . . .This winsome pairing of text and illustration is a natural for storytime." -- SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL (starred review) (Ages 4-7) Miss Merriweather, the head librarian, is very particular about rules in the library. No running allowed. And you must be quiet. But when a lion comes to the library one day, no one is sure what to do. There aren't any rules about lions in the library. And, as it turns out, this lion seems very well suited to library visiting. His big feet are quiet on the library floor. He makes a comfy backrest for the children at story hour. And he never roars in the library, at least not anymore. But when something terrible happens, the lion quickly comes to the rescue in the only way he knows how. Michelle Knudsen's disarming story, illustrated by the matchless Kevin Hawkes in an expressive timeless style, will win over even the most ardent of rule keepers.

Download or read book School Library Storytime written by Brenda S. Copeland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an invaluable resource for school library aides who conduct storytime activities, providing everything from instruction on how to read to children to a week-by-week read aloud curriculum for the entire school year. School Library Storytime: Just the Basics is the perfect resource for library aides, paraprofessionals, or other library staff who conduct storytime in a school library media center. It provides all of the essential information, materials, and step-by-step guidance needed to facilitate these all-important events for children in kindergarten through second grade, allowing library staff without previous training or experience to get started with confidence. The fifth title in the highly regarded Just the Basics series, this book starts with an introduction, followed by explanations of how to read aloud and tips for managing and working with children in the primary grades. The authors suggest specific picture books that tie into school year-based themes and supply materials that can be used as listed or easily modified to meet the individual library's needs. Event-specific lessons are supplied for many weeks within the school year, making this title one that educators will rely on for storytime ideas from September through May.
Book Synopsis The Laughing Librarian by : Jeanette C. Smith
Download or read book The Laughing Librarian written by Jeanette C. Smith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the stodgy stereotypes, libraries and librarians themselves can be quite funny. The spectrum of library humor from sources inside and outside the profession ranges from the subtle wit of the New Yorker to the satire of Mad. This examination of American library humor over the past 200 years covers a wide range of topics and spans the continuum between light and dark, from parodies to portrayals of libraries and their staffs as objects of fear. It illuminates different types of librarians--the collector, the organization person, the keeper, the change agent--and explores stereotypes like the shushing little old lady with a bun, the male scholar-librarian, the library superhero, and the anti-stereotype of the sexy librarian. Profiles of the most prominent library humorists round out this lively study.

Book Synopsis Liesl Frank, Charlotte Dieterle and the European Film Fund by : Martin Sauter
Download or read book Liesl Frank, Charlotte Dieterle and the European Film Fund written by Martin Sauter and published by epubli. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting out to provide a definitive history of the European Film Fund (EFF), the purpose of this thesis is as follows: first, to draw attention to the many exile and refugee organisations by examining one of them, the EFF. As a study of a refugee organisation founded as a result of Nazism, my examination of the EFF not only fills an existing gap in film history as far as the EFF itself is concerned. Refugee organisations in general have received scant attention by exile scholars. By making one refugee organisation the focus of my inquiry, I am also highlighting the presence of women in the topic of exile as two women, Liesl Frank, wife of the writer Bruno Frank, and Charlotte Dieterle, wife of the director William Dieterle, were at the centre of the EFF. My investigation of this organisation demonstrates that women played a much larger role in exile and exile communities than history and literature have thus far accorded them. Additionally, I show how the political situation after 1933, including apathy by the international community, led to the founding of the EFF. Lastly, by shifting the focus away from figureheads of the émigré community to below-the-line film artists, technicians, theatre artists and so on, I foreground those refugees whose lives have hitherto been obscured by their more famous fellow émigrés.
