Book Synopsis The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 by : Christina B. Carroll
Download or read book The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 written by Christina B. Carroll and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By highlighting the connections between domestic political struggles and overseas imperial structures, The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 explains how and why French Republicans embraced colonial conquest as a central part of their political platform. Christina B. Carroll explores the meaning and value of empire in late-nineteenth-century France, arguing that ongoing disputes about the French state's political organization intersected with racialized beliefs about European superiority over colonial others in French imperial thought. For much of this period, French writers and politicians did not always differentiate between continental and colonial empire. By employing a range of sources—from newspapers and pamphlets to textbooks and novels—Carroll demonstrates that the memory of older continental imperial models shaped French understandings of, and justifications for, their new colonial empire. She shows that the slow identification of the two types of empire emerged due to a politicized campaign led by colonial advocates who sought to defend overseas expansion against their opponents. This new model of colonial empire was shaped by a complicated set of influences, including political conflict, the legacy of both Napoleons, international competition, racial science, and French experiences in the colonies. The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900 skillfully weaves together knowledge from its wide-ranging source base to articulate how the meaning and history of empire became deeply intertwined with the meaning and history of the French nation.
Book Synopsis The History of French Colonial Policy, 1870-1925 by : Stephen H. Roberts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1963: The author gives a clear and accurate account of the immense development of France as a colonial power which, in an incredibly short space of time, was to control one third of Africa. He drew his material not only from the scanty formal literature then available, but also by carefully evaluating and selecting from large mass of controversial material to be found in deliberate propaganda, parliamentary debates, and the often suspect offical documentation.

Book Synopsis European Empires from Conquest to Collapse, 1815-1960 by : Victor G. Kiernan
Download or read book European Empires from Conquest to Collapse, 1815-1960 written by Victor G. Kiernan and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Empires from Conquest to Collapse is a vivid anticolonial reckoning with the history of imperial warfare. Global in scope, it deftly surveys the fighting forces and military engagements of the Great Powers, from the British in India to the scramble for Africa. Victor Kiernan lays bare the doctrines and realities of colonial fighting, dispelling official legends. Europe often boasted that coloni- alism was 'civilised', but the facts show it could be barbaric. Kiernan traces how guerrilla insurgency against colonial oppression developed into one of the most sophisticated branches of the art of war. With a foreword by Tariq Ali, author of Winston Churchill: His Times, His Crimes.
Book Synopsis Angkor Wat – A Transcultural History of Heritage by : Michael Falser
Download or read book Angkor Wat – A Transcultural History of Heritage written by Michael Falser and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unravels the formation of the modern concept of cultural heritage by charting its colonial, postcolonial-nationalist and global trajectories. By bringing to light many unresearched dimensions of the twelfth-century Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat during its modern history, the study argues for a conceptual, connected history that unfolded within the transcultural interstices of European and Asian projects. With more than 1,400 black-and-white and colour illustrations of historic photographs, architectural plans and samples of public media, the monograph discusses the multiple lives of Angkor Wat over a 150-year-long period from the 1860s to the 2010s. Volume 1 (Angkor in France) reconceptualises the Orientalist, French-colonial ‘discovery’ of the temple in the nineteenth century and brings to light the manifold strategies at play in its physical representations as plaster cast substitutes in museums and as hybrid pavilions in universal and colonial exhibitions in Marseille and Paris from 1867 to 1937. Volume 2 (Angkor in Cambodia) covers, for the first time in this depth, the various on-site restoration efforts inside the ‘Archaeological Park of Angkor’ from 1907 until 1970, and the temple’s gradual canonisation as a symbol of national identity during Cambodia’s troublesome decolonisation (1953–89), from independence to Khmer Rouge terror and Vietnamese occupation, and, finally, as a global icon of UNESCO World Heritage since 1992 until today.

Book Synopsis Prohibitions and Psychoactive Substances in History, Culture and Theory by : Susannah Wilson
Download or read book Prohibitions and Psychoactive Substances in History, Culture and Theory written by Susannah Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a new contribution to the dynamic scholarly discussion of the control and regulation of psychoactive substances in culture and society. Offering new critical reflections on the reasons prohibitions have historically arisen, the book analyses "prohibitions" as ambivalent and tenuous interactions between the users of psychoactive substances and regulators of their use. This original collection of essays engages with contemporary debates concerning addiction, intoxication and drug regulation, and will be of interest to scholars in the arts, humanities and social sciences interested in narratives of prohibition and their social and cultural meanings.
