The subject of a widely respected family history by Merrow Edgerton Sorley, originally published in 1935 and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Co., the Lewises of Warner Hall and their descendants have made notable contributions to Virginia and the nation. Since the original publication of Sorley's Lewis of Warner Hall, a debate has raged over the identity of the family's immigrant ancestor, whom Sorley presumed to be one ROBERT LEWIS of Wales. It was left to Mrs. Moses to show conclusively that Sorley was wrong and that the true immigrant ancestor of the Lewises of Warner Hall was JOHN LEWIS, who settled at Totopotomoys Creek in Gloucester County, Virginia on July l, 1653. In her vitally important little book The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657), originally published in 1984, Mrs. Moses traces back the Welsh side of the Lewis family for three generations in the vicinity of its ancestral home in Llangatock, Breconshire, and also resolves a number of issues surrounding the authenticity of the family coat-of-arms.

Scholars who work on manuscript culture, the history of printing, cultural history, historical bibliography, and the institutions of early modern drama and theater have been brought together to address such topics as the social character of texts, historical changes in notions of literary authority and intellectual property, the mutual influence and tensions between the different forms of "publication," and the epistemological and social implications of various communications technologies. It depicts thee increasing laicization of the first half of the nineteenth century, with its mediocre church attendance and secularized morality, and goes on to show how the two decdes after 1850 reversed the trend toward secularization. During the latter period, renewal of the people's loyalty to the church encouraged a developing political Catholicism. The author demonstrates that urbanization and industrialization may well have strengthened popular piety, rather than weakening it. He considers a variety of political implications of popular religious life, from the revolution of 1848/49 to the Kulturkampf of the 1870s, and see political Catholicism in Germany as asrising not exclusively from church-state confrontations but from the interaction of new religious practices with a changing socioeconomic environment and a counter-revolutionary ideology. What did the Goodrich family "possess" which made them so unique? A belief in the power of knowledge, the importance of education, and a strong work ethic combined to imbue the Goodrich family with a distinctive sense of civic duty. James Goodrich served as governor of Indiana from 1917 to 1921 and as adviser to Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. During his eulogy of James Goodrich, the Reverend Gustav Papperman explained, "The Governor felt that he had been given talents that were a trust, that he was to administer them faithfully. . . ." According to author Dane Starbuck, "Education was a large part of the Goodriches' work ethos. . . . The family viewed education as a process by virtue of which the individual remained informed, made better business decisions, learned the importance of citizenship, and was given an opportunity for individual self-improvement. Therefore, work and education became the centerpieces of the Goodrich family's ethical and practical life." In later years, Pierre Goodrich, successful businessman and entrepreneur, would set aside a portion of his estate to found Liberty Fund because he believed that the principles of liberty on which our nation was founded need to be constantly kept before the public.
