Book excerpt: Alexander Hamilton, born in the British West Indies, was an outsider from the very beginning. His illegitimate birth drove him to prove his worthiness to others throughout his life. His quest for honor was one of the defining characteristics that colored his decisions. Hamilton was a small man with a large ambition, and this would drive him to greatness and create some powerful enemies in his wake. Alexander Hamilton's life was not without its share of tragedy. Before his fifteenth birthday, his father had abandoned the family and his mother had died of yellow fever. Luckily for young Alexander, a group of benefactors realized his potential and paid to have him sent to the British colony, America, for an education. After serving as General Washington's aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War, Hamilton returned to his law practice and soon entered politics. In 1787, he would help draft the Constitution of the United States and then write a series of critical essays, called the Federalist Papers, which were key to ratification of the Constitution. Hamilton's position on the role of government was for a strong Federal government. President Washington nominated Hamilton to become the first Secretary of the Treasury. During his tenure as Secretary of the Treasury, he set the nation on a sound fiscal footing, established the first national bank, and a mint to produce coinage. Hamilton was a master of setting up institutions within the government and making bitter enemies of powerful men, such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Aaron Burr. One of Hamilton's political rivalries would turn very personal as Aaron Burr, the sitting Vice President of the United States, was seeking retaliation for Hamilton's disparaging remarks. Hamilton's honor would not let him decline Burr's challenge to a duel. The outcome of the duel was fatal for Alexander Hamilton - dead at age forty-nine, leaving behind a wife, seven living children, and a legacy that would survive the centuries Spend some time with this distinguished American and buy the book, Alexander Hamilton - A Short Biography. 30 Minute Book Series Welcome to the ninth book in the 30 Minute Book Series. Book excerpt: University Press returns with another short and captivating portrait of one of history's most compelling figures, Alexander Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton was a penniless orphan from a remote island in the Caribbean. Yet he went on to become one of the elite Founding Fathers of the United States, and, as America's first Treasury Secretary, the founder of the nation's financial system. A man of honor, conviction, and genius, Alexander was still not immune to scandal and conflict. His extra-marital affair deeply hurt his beloved wife and brought him ridicule from his political opponents. And his bitter dispute with Vice President Aaron Burr resulted in their famous duel - and in Hamilton's violent and premature death. This short book tells the intensely human story of a man who changed the world in a way that no one else could.

Book excerpt: History Hub presents a short and captivating look into Alexander Hamilton's complete life from beginning to end, one of history's great notable figures worthy to discover. Alexander Hamilton, a destined strategic warrior who later became one of America's greatest statesmen, was born in Nevis's low-income family on the 11th of January 1755 in Charlestown. His early life from humble beginnings didn't hinder him from becoming George Washington's right-hand man and, later on, one of the United States of America's founding fathers. Not only through the federal financial system, but through the brilliance of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alexander Hamilton's legacy has continued. In his career and afterward, society misrepresented much of what he did and felt. But he was a genius in his work. The government could have ended in the Civil War without his creative mind and strategies. In reality, the United States will not be what it is if it's not for Alexander Hamilton. Discover in this short biography the remarkable story of a life who inspired generations to come. This book also contains 30 questions for an in-depth discussion into the life of Alexander Hamilton. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Hamilton’s turbulent life, the dramatic birth of a nation . . . propelled with the page-turning intensity of an epic novel.” —Ronald Blumer, Peabody Award–winning writer A new reissue of this important biography of Alexander Hamilton—arguably one of the most brilliant and complex of our nation’s founders. From his less than auspicious start in 1755 on the Caribbean island of Nevis, to his unhappy fate in 1804 in Weehawken, New Jersey, at the hands of his enemy Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton’s short life left a huge legacy. Orphaned at eleven and apprenticed to a counting house, Hamilton learned the principles of business that helped him, as the first Secretary of the Treasury, create the American banking system and invent the modern corporation. He served in the American Revolution, primarily as aide-de-camp to General Washington, and subsequently developed a successful legal career, co-wrote The Federalist Papers, and built a life in politics. Told in a highly readable style, Alexander Hamilton presents Hamilton’s contributions to America, and what they mean today. “Assiduously researched and appealingly written . . . an informative and insightful portrait of a highly complex personality.” —Houston Chronicle “Engaging . . . vivid.” —Publishers Weekly “Randall excels in describing the conflicts Hamilton created and weathered as a soldier, politician and lawyer.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch “This is biographical excellence—solid, first rate work.” —William H. Hallahan, author of The Day the American Revolution Began “A fresh look at the many-faceted career of one of the Founding Fathers.” —BookPage “This richly detailed, deeply sympathetic biography gives us a Hamilton we’re compelled to know—hungry, human, brilliant and magnificant.” —Virginia Scharff, author of Twenty Thousand Roads
