Book Synopsis The Early History of the Viol by : Ian Woodfield
Download or read book The Early History of the Viol written by Ian Woodfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-04-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of the viol from its late medieval Spanish origins to the sixteenth century, when it became the most widely played bowed instrument in western Europe. Ian Woodfield examines the two most important ancestors of the instrument, the Moorish rahab and the vihuela de mano. From these two instruments emerged an early form of viol, the Valencian vihuela de arco, which spread rapidly across the Mediterranean during the papacy of Rodrigo Borgia. The viol was enthusiastically accepted by the d'Este and Gonzaga families and other Italian arbiters before migrating across the Alps and into the rest of Europe. The author discusses all aspects of the viol during its Renaissance hey-day: the growing perfection of viol design at the hands of Italian craftsmen; the gradual evolution of tuning systems; the development of advanced playing techniques and the wide range of music, both solo and consort. The final chapter examines the growth of a viol playing tradition in sixteenth-century England, in particular in the London choir-schools. Dr Woodfield brings iconographic evidence and an interesting approach to this study which will be of interest to musicologists, iconographers, organologists and viol players.

Book Synopsis Music in Renaissance Lyons by : Frank Dobbins
Download or read book Music in Renaissance Lyons written by Frank Dobbins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of musical life in Lyons at a time when the city was a leading European commercial and cultural center, this book surveys the vast repertoire of music copied and published, relating it to social, political, economic, intellectual, and religious life. The great wealth of the city's literature is scrutinized for references which provide testimony to the musical attitudes and activities of resident or visiting patrons and amateurs. Information on the composers who lived or worked in Lyons is gleaned from contemporary records, dedications, and correspondence as well as from their musical output. The masses, motets, chansons, madrigals, psalms, and instrumental music for church, state, and citizen are reviewed, reflecting changes in form and style that occur in response to the requirements of visiting courts of an increasingly demanding bourgeoisie, led by affluent Italian patricians and eventually a more intrusive Protestant community.

Book Synopsis Hearing the City in Early Modern Europe by : Tess Knighton
Download or read book Hearing the City in Early Modern Europe written by Tess Knighton and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearing the City is a major new contribution to the field of urban musicology in the early modern period with twenty-one essays by leading figures in the field from Europe, the USA and Australia. The urban soundscape is studied from a range of different interdisciplinary perspectives, and its scope is broad, from the major role of city minstrels in fifteenth-century Viennese urban identity to the civic problems presented by the location of opera houses in Enlightenment Naples. The individual contributions explore themes related to the complex relationships between sound and space within the urban context and between social identity and civic authorities and draw on a wide range of source material from city pay documents and legislation to contemporaneous accounts, correspondence, travel writing, religious and moral tracts, fictional writing and architectural legacy. Aspects of urban soundscapes both specific and common to Naples, Rome, Palermo, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Lisbon, London, Vienna, Hamburg and Zurich are analyzed in their broader socio-cultural contexts, as well as the dynamic networks between cities in Europe and beyond. These case studies are framed by Tim Carter's stimulating introduction to the development of historical urban sound studies and a coda in the form of a discussion as to how the results of urban musicology might be applied through a digital platform to reach beyond academic discourse to involve modern citizens in hearing the soundworlds of the past.
