Book excerpt: "Like cold water to a weary soul is the good news from a distant land." Proverbs 25:25 I am a fellow traveler who has passed through some dry and desert wastelands in my life, and I too have experienced the weariness and spiritual dehydration of these places. When I have needed that living water, cold and fresh, to restore my strength and hope and to renew me again, the Lord has been right there holding out that cup of cold drink through His Word. If that word "weary" describes what you're struggling with right now, my prayer is that the chapters in this book will be the cup that will bring the refreshing cold water to your weary soul. "The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come.' Let anyone who hears this say, 'Come.' Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life" (Revelation 22:17, NLT). Jesus is the living water, and He is inviting you to come and drink. "I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint" (Jeremiah 31:25, NIV).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of a Traveller The book, of which we are now offering a translation to the English public, is the most attaching to the heart, and at the same time, we do not hesitate to say, the most important for the intellect, which we have met with for nearly twenty years. It is a fragment of the secret biography of a powerful intelligence, the confession of a great and noble soul, who has suffered much and loved much, addressed to all those who suffer and who love and at the same time it displays a burning page of truth snatched from contemporary history; the account of a moral crisis which has lasted from 1815 until now the long and prophetic lamentation of a whole generation, which has come into the world between two suns, whose life, marked by genius and mis fortune, has consumed itself amongst the ruins of social order, without being able to escape and spread itself 30570118157 over the promised land of the future. 'the last pages of the book are illumined by the beams of the coming day, and the vague out lines of the hoped-for land reveal themselves; a reality distant, without doubt, but certain, nevertheless, in the opinion of this way-weary Traveller. Book excerpt: This is is the first critical study of one of the most important women writers of the early eighteenth century, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689–1762), who produced a body of erudite and entertaining correspondence that spanned more than fifty years. Lady Mary's letters illuminate the difficulties encountered by a sensitive, intelligent, and gifted woman writer living through an era of significant cultural change. These letters display the tensions inherent in the competing demands of public and private life, revealing Lady Mary's own discomfort about the problems of authorship and authority in an age that held publication to be an improper activity for respectable women. Through the discourse of supposedly “private” letters, Lady Mary was able to find an avenue for her talents that brought her “public” stature without violating the imperatives of her position as a woman and an aristocrat. Cynthia Lowenthal argues persuasively that Lady Mary's letters, themselves central to the establishment of the familiar letter as an important eighteenthcentury genre, were self-consciously constructed as literary artifacts and crafted as part of a larger female epistolary tradition. Moreover, Lowenthal contends, the works of Lady Mary are essential to the feminist recuperation of women's writing precisely because she provided an aristocratic critique—a voice often ignored—of the class and gender codes of her day.

Book excerpt: Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820), poet, essayist, playwright, and one of the most thoroughgoing advocates of women's rights in early America, was as well known in her own day as Abigail Adams or Martha Washington. Her name, though, has virtually disappeared from the public consciousness. Thanks to the recent discovery of Murray's papers—including some 2,500 personal letters—historian Sheila L. Skemp has documented the compelling story of this talented and most unusual eighteenth-century woman. Born in Gloucester, Massachussetts, Murray moved to Boston in 1793 with her second husband, Universalist minister John Murray. There she became part of the city's literary scene. Two of her plays were performed at Federal Street Theater, making her the first American woman to have a play produced in Boston. There as well she wrote and published her magnum opus, The Gleaner, a three-volume "miscellany" that included poems, essays, and the novel-like story "Margaretta." After 1800, Murray's output diminished and her hopes for literary renown faded. Suffering from the backlash against women's rights that had begun to permeate American society, struggling with economic difficulties, and concerned about providing the best possible education for her daughter, she devoted little time to writing. But while her efforts diminished, they never ceased. Murray was determined to transcend the boundaries that limited women of her era and worked tirelessly to have women granted the same right to the "pursuit of happiness" immortalized in the Declaration of Independence. She questioned the meaning of gender itself, emphasizing the human qualities men and women shared, arguing that the apparent distinctions were the consequence of nurture, not nature. Although she was disappointed in the results of her efforts, Murray nevertheless left a rich intellectual and literary legacy, in which she challenged the new nation to fulfill its promise of equality to all citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of charming and eloquent letters that contain the seeds of Tocqueville’s later masterful account of American democracy Young Alexis de Tocqueville arrived in the United States for the first time in May 1831, commissioned by the French government to study the American prison system. For the next nine months he and his companion, Gustave de Beaumont, traveled and observed not only prisons but also the political, economic, and social systems of the early republic. Along the way, they frequently reported back to friends and family members in France. This book presents the first translation of the complete letters Tocqueville wrote during that seminal journey, accompanied by excerpts from Beaumont’s correspondence that provide details or different perspectives on the places, people, and American life and attitudes the travelers encountered. These delightful letters provide an intimate portrait of the complicated, talented Tocqueville, who opened himself without prejudice to the world of Jacksonian America. Moreover, they contain many of the impressions and ideas that served as preliminary sketches for Democracy in America, his classic account of the American democratic system that remains an important reference work to this day. Accessible, witty, and charming, the letters Tocqueville penned while in America are of major interest to general readers, scholars, and students alike.
