John Forsyth, on the Subject of Domestic Slavery: To Which Are Prefixed Copies, in Latin and English, of the Pope's Apostolic Letter, Concerning the African Slave Trade, With Some Introductory Remarks, Etc I know many slaves who would not accept their' freedom; I know some who have refused it; and though our domestic slavery must upon the whole be regarded as involuntary, still the exceptions are not so few as are ima gined by strangers. It may be asked why any one should prefer slavery to freedom. I know many instances where the advantages to the individual are very great; and so, sir, I am confident do you, yet I am not in love with the existence of slavery. I would never aid in establishing it where it did not exist. St. Thomas gives very brie y one of the principles upon which the answer may rest, and Aristotle sustains him (in l Pom. C. 3. Circafin. T. In his view. St. Thomas is proving that the law of nations is distinct from the natural law, and answering an assertion that slavery is of the natural law because some men are naturally fitted for slavery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that tradition and history meant little to nineteenth-century American Protestants, who relied on common sense and "the Bible alone." The Old Faith in a New Nation challenges this portrayal by recovering evangelical engagement with the Christian past. Even when they appeared to be most scornful toward tradition, most optimistic and forward-looking, and most confident in their grasp of the Bible, evangelicals found themselves returning, time and again, to Christian history. They studied religious historiography, reinterpreted the history of the church, and argued over its implications for the present. Between the Revolution and the Civil War, American Protestants were deeply interested in the meaning of the Christian past. Paul J. Gutacker draws from hundreds of print sources-sermons, books, speeches, legal arguments, political petitions, and more-to show how ordinary educated Americans remembered and used Christian history. While claiming to rely on the Bible alone, antebellum Protestants frequently turned to the Christian past on questions of import: how should the government relate to religion? Could Catholic immigrants become true Americans? What opportunities and rights should be available to women? To African Americans? Protestants across denominations answered these questions not only with the Bible but also with history. By recovering the ways in which American evangelicals remembered and used Christian history, The Old Faith in a New Nation shows how religious memory shaped the nation and interrogates the meaning of "biblicism."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four men joined the Catholic Church in the mid-1840s: a soldier, his bishop brother, a priest born a slave and an editor. For the next two decades they were in the thick of the battles of the era--Catholicism versus Know-Nothingism, slavery versus abolition, North versus South. Much has been written about the Catholic Church and about the Civil War. This book is the first in more than half a century to focus exclusively on the intersection of these two topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part II of the Marian Publication series, "The Conflict Between the North and the South." The issue of slavery is examined from a Catholic perspective of authority and servitude, and how both are misunderstood in this post-Enlightenment age. What were the origins of slavery in America? Were only blacks enslaved? Were whites the only slave holders? Who primarily financed and ran the slave trade from America? Did all, or most, slaves despise their masters? Are all forms of slavery intrinsically evil? Author Adam Miller provides a jaw-dropping, eye-opening myth-destroyer concerning slavery in the United States of America. Written from a most unique perspective when it comes to this emotional topic: not neccessarily from a pro-Southern perspective, but from a traditional Catholic historical approach. "The North, the South, and Slavery" was written as a remedy to the numerous distortions, misrepresentations, and out-right falsehoods concerning slavery, the South, and the North's connection with the slave-trade.

Book excerpt: “[A] vivid and engrossing study of slavery in and around one of its trading hubs, Charleston, SC . . . an important contribution to Southern antebellum history.” —Library Journal In America’s Longest Siege, historian Joseph Kelly captures the toxic mix of nationalism, paternalism, and wealth that made Charleston the center of the nationwide debate over slavery and the tragic act of secession that doomed both the city and the South. Thoroughly researched and compulsively readable, America’s Longest Siege offers a new take on the Civil War and the culture that made it inevitable. “Lays bare the decades-long campaign of rationalization and intimidation that revivified and reinforced the institution of slavery and dragged the United States into disunion and civil war . . . this masterful study is a timely and important reminder of the consequences that result when ideological extremists succeed in drowning out the voices of reason.” —Peter Quinn, author of Hour of the Cat
