Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Spain in 1856 and 1857 The only apology which the author can seriously make for adding one to the multitude of slight books on Spain is, that, some practice in this kind of writing, and habits of labour to which the exercise was congenial, he has been able, in the daily course of travelling, to fix while they were recent, and to throw promptly into narrative and description, the impressions made upon his mind by new scenes and new manners, in a land teeming with beauty and still rich in originality: the images have been given before they were obscured by time, or confused with ideas subse quently acquired: and if this has been done with apparent truth and with some freshness of effect, the work may have a feature which will entitle it to be looked at among the crowd. In the early letters changes have been made, without, it is hoped, detract ing from the simplicity of the material, for the sake of variety and interest. Many new letters have been introduced which have been used in business between firms in the United States and Spanish America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Corte: Letters From Spain, 1863 to 1866 Now that the completion of the railway across the Pyrenees has opened up Spain to the English tourists, and numbers of these enterprising pleasure-seekers find their way every year to the "Capital of the World," as its inhabitants boastfully call Madrid, numerous books have been written professing to give a more or less exhaustive account of Spain and the Spaniards. Looking at those which have been published within the last two years, the question might well be asked, "Why add to their number?" Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Our Affairs With Spain The United States seem to be involved with Spain in a misunderstanding of which our citizens in general have but an imperfect knowledge. We purpose to notice the causes of this misunderstanding between the two countries, and, that we may acquit ourselves, in some measure, to the satisfaction of the reader, in the discussion of subjects in their nature extremely intricate, respect will be paid to perspicuity and conciseness. Before, however, we advance to the business immediately before us, it may not be useless to advert to correlative facts and diplomatic artifices. Until recently we had consoled ourselves with the pleasing reflection, that we were at peace with all the world, and, apart from the aggressions committed by the British ships of war at Sandy Hook, that it was not likely our repose would be speedily and materially interrupted. It was not generally, if at all, understood, that differences of a serious nature existed to menace our tranquillity with Spain. Bridgeman, afterwards Earl of Bradford, during a tour on the continent, made in company with Lord John Russell and the Hon. Robert H. Clive, in the years 1812-14. It is thought that the notices of events during the Peninsular War give them a somewhat wider interest than is possessed by ordinary private letters, and a few copies have therefore been printed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Spanish Inquisition: A Rare Work, and the Best Which Has Ever Appeared on the Subject That a temporal punishment awaits the penitent even a er the remis sion of the eternal penalty, strange as it may appear to Protestants, is satisfactorily proved by Scripture. We read in the book OF numbers, that the Lord, after he had pardoned the Israelites for their ungrateful and iniquitous murmuring, had debarred them from the Promised Land, on account of that sin. We find that, after the royal David had repented of his adulterous intercourse, and was assured by the prophet Nathan, on the part of God, that the sin was forgiven, a temporal punishment, (the death of the illicit o 'spring, ) as predicted by the man of God, had actually followed. So much for the temporal punishment. That this can be mod erated, or forgiven, is proved by St. Paul's conduct towards the incestuous Corinthian, whose body had been delivered over to Satan, but who, after his penitential tears, and true amendment of life, had been freed by that great apostle, in the person of Christ. From that awful calamity. In a word, from the days of the apostles down to the present period, the Cath olic Church, by virtue of the power which Christ gave her, has granted the relaxation of this temporal punishment, or this indulgence, whenever the spiritual good of the penitent required it, and when there existed a well-grounded apprehension that a rigorous penance would prove preju dicial to him. Hence what the apostle says to the Corinthians in rela tion to that sorrowmg sinner, the Church observes to her pastors, in all penitential cases, You should rather pardon and comfort him, lest per haps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany, in the Years 1759, 1760, and 1761, Vol. 3 My inn I think is as bad as can possibly be. Indeed to the south-ward of Rome, things begin to have the air of Spain. There is some reason why accommodations would be worse in hot countries than in colder climates. The mildness of the air renders them less necessary. At this time of the year, people would be starved in England in the room I am at present setting. No glass to the windows, tho' that indeed is at present remedied by the wooden shutters being closed, but then there are proper interstices to let the wind pass. My chimney likewise smokes. Part of my supper is just tumbled down, or rather up flairs, and I am going to eat the rest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Spain, Italy, and Germany, During a Residence on the Continent of Four Years Murat, Bonaparte's first general of cavalry. The troops, though generally much less men than ours, are active and well-disciplined; the grenadiers are tall, thin, and muscular, with moustache, and lofty bearskin caps, which give them a fierce and im posing aspect. They went through their evolutions with great precision and celerity, often at a running pace, which gives them, it is said, great advantage over the Austrians, their great opponents, who, though larger men, are comparatively slow in their movements. Murat seems an excited, fierce-looking fellow - he has the reputation of being a dashing officer of cavalry. The expression of his coun tomance appeared to me vulgar and repulsive, his manners full of coarseness and brusquerie. His face of a deep red colour, is pitted with small-pox, and reminded me of the description of the Emperor Domitian, one of Rome's greatest tyrants, who, when tired of the pastime of murdering Roman citizens, amused himself in his palace killing the flies.
