Book Synopsis Letters and Orations by : Cassandra Fedele
Download or read book Letters and Orations written by Cassandra Fedele and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the fifteenth century, Cassandra Fedele (1465-1558), a learned middle-class woman of Venice, was arguably the most famous woman writer and scholar in Europe. A cultural icon in her own time, she regularly corresponded with the king of France, lords of Milan and Naples, the Borgia pope Alexander VI, and even maintained a ten-year epistolary exchange with Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain that resulted in an invitation for her to join their court. Fedele's letters reveal the central, mediating role she occupied in a community of scholars otherwise inaccessible to women. Her unique admittance into this community is also highlighted by her presence as the first independent woman writer in Italy to speak publicly and, more importantly, the first to address philosophical, political, and moral issues in her own voice. Her three public orations and almost all of her letters, translated into English, are presented here for the first time.

Book Synopsis Selected Letters, Orations, and Rhetorical Dialogues by : Madeleine de Scudery
Download or read book Selected Letters, Orations, and Rhetorical Dialogues written by Madeleine de Scudery and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) was the most popular novelist in her time, read in French in volume installments all over Europe and translated into English, German, Italian, and even Arabic. But she was also a charismatic figure in French salon culture, a woman who supported herself through her writing and defended women's education. She was the first woman to be honored by the French Academy, and she earned a pension from Louis XIV for her writing. Selected Letters, Orations, and Rhetorical Dialogues is a careful selection of Scudéry's shorter writings, emphasizing her abilities as a rhetorical theorist, orator, essayist, and letter writer. It provides the first English translations of some of Scudéry's Amorous Letters, only recently identified as her work, as well as selections from her Famous Women, or Heroic Speeches, and her series of Conversations. The book will be of great interest to scholars of the history of rhetoric, French literature, and women's studies.
Book Synopsis Duchess and Hostage in Renaissance Naples by : Ippolita Maria Sforza
Download or read book Duchess and Hostage in Renaissance Naples written by Ippolita Maria Sforza and published by Iter Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents in translation 100 previously unknown letters of Ippolita Maria Sforza (1445–1488), daughter of the Duke of Milan, who was sent at age twenty to marry the son of the infamously brutal King Ferrante of Naples. Sforza’s letters display the adroit diplomacy she used to strengthen the alliance between Milan and Naples, then the two most powerful states in Italy, amid such grave crises as her brother’s assassination in Milan and the Turkish invasion of Otranto. Still, Ippolita lived as a hostage at the Neapolitan court, subject not only to the threat of foreign invasion but also to her husband’s well-known sexual adventures and her father-in-law’s ruthlessness. Soon after Ippolita’s mysterious death in 1488, the fraught Naples-Milan alliance collapsed.

Download or read book Speeches of Note written by Shaun Usher and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller Letters of Note comes a collection of 75 of history's most interesting, profound, and sometimes unknown speeches from a range of scintillating personalities such as Frederick Douglass, Justin Trudeau, Albert Einstein, Meghan Markle, Barbara Jordan, and Ursula K. Le Guin. This thoughtfully curated and richly illustrated collection celebrates oratory old and new, highlighting speeches we know and admire, while also shining a light on profound drafts that were never delivered or have until now been forgotten. From George Bernard Shaw's warm and rousing toast to Albert Einstein in 1930 and the commencement address affectionately given to graduates at Long Island University by Kermit the Frog, to the chilling public announcement (that was thankfully never made) by President Richard Nixon should Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the moon, Speeches of Note honors the words and ideas of some of history’s most provocative and inspiring personages.

Download or read book Ten Orations written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Orations: With the Letters to His Wife Following the example of a standard German edition, the rhetorical emphasis has been indicated in the text of the first oration by the use of italic type for words made emphatic by position or antithesis. This feature should prove helpful in teaching students to read Latin aloud with expression; and the ability to do that is not only valuable in itself, but also of great assistance in the intelligent appreciation of that which is read. The text of this edition is that of C. F. W. Mueller, with such changes in orthography and punctuation as were necessary to bring it into accord with the plan of Macmillan's Latin Series. Lewis' Elementary Latin Dictionary has been used as the standard for etymol ogy, orthography, and the quantity of vowels, except in cases where error was evident. Book Synopsis Complete Writings by : Isotta Nogarola
Download or read book Complete Writings written by Isotta Nogarola and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned in her day for her scholarship and eloquence, Isotta Nogarola (1418-66) remained one of the most famous women of the Italian Renaissance for centuries after her death. And because she was one of the first women to carve out a place for herself in the male-dominated republic of letters, Nogarola served as a crucial role model for generations of aspiring female artists and writers. This volume presents English translations of all of Nogarola's extant works and highlights just how daring and original her convictions were. In her letters and orations, Nogarola elegantly synthesized Greco-Roman thought with biblical teachings. And striding across the stage in public, she lectured the Veronese citizenry on everything from history and religion to politics and morality. But the most influential of Nogarola's works was a performance piece, Dialogue on Adam and Eve, in which she discussed the relative sinfulness of Adam and Eve—thereby opening up a centuries-long debate in Europe on gender and the nature of woman and establishing herself as an important figure in Western intellectual history. This book will be a must read for teachers and students of Women's Studies as well as of Renaissance literature and history.
