Book excerpt: This exact transcription of the well-known letter from John Rolfe, a?Virginia settler, to Sir Thomas Dale has been modernized for ease of reading, but otherwise retains the original wording. In this letter, Rolfe puts forth a long and theological argument for his marriage to Pocahontas, arguing that it is his Christian duty to marry one outside the faith and "make her a Christian." He writes of his surprise "to be in love with one whose education hath bin rude, her manners barbarous, her generation accursed, and so discrepant in all nurtriture frome my selfe, that oftentimes with feare and trembling." He defends his actions, arguing that "her great apparance of love to me, her desire to be taught and instructed in the knowledge of God, her capablenesse of understanding, her aptnesse and willingnesse to receive anie good impression, and also the spirituall, besides her owne incitements stirring me up hereunto."?While his tone is formal and measured, he speaks of his passions and sufferings, revealing strong feelings for Pocahontas. The two were married in April 1614, before the letter was written.?
