Book excerpt: An engrossing and thoughtful contemporary tale that tackles faith, friendship, family, anxiety, and the potential apocalypse from Katie Henry, the acclaimed author of Heretics Anonymous. There are many ways the world could end. A fire. A catastrophic flood. A super eruption that spews lakes of lava. Ellis Kimball has made note of all possible scenarios, and she is prepared for each one. What she doesn’t expect is meeting Hannah Marks in her therapist’s waiting room. Hannah calls their meeting fate. After all, Ellis is scared about the end of the world; Hannah knows when it’s going to happen. Despite Ellis’s anxiety—about what others think of her, about what she’s doing wrong, about the safety of her loved ones—the two girls become friends. But time is ticking down, and as Ellis tries to help Hannah decipher the details of her doomsday premonition, their search for answers only raises more questions. When does it happen? Who will believe them? And how do you prepare for the end of the world when it feels like your life is just getting started?

And that emotion is often negative, leading us into bewilderment, dysfunction, and failure. This book explains how to face up to this reality and respond by building street smarts and business emotional intelligence (BEQ). It supports your business success by developing your ability to recognize and effectively manage the destructive emotional tendencies, hidden agendas, and behaviors that exist all around you, and sometimes within you, that block business progress. Emotions don’t belong in the business process, we are told. And that’s absolutely correct when destructive feelings disrupt the workplace. But here is the dirty little secret: Irrational and runaway feelings nevertheless dominate in many businesses and hold back professionals who are crippled by emotional dynamics that often play out beyond conscious awareness and their control. Learn how and why emotions are a controlling factor in every career or business success and failure, and how to work with them to achieve your full potential by developing (BEQ). Expand and transform your business thinking and approach, by learning to recognize common, hidden emotional issues in a simple and straightforward manner. Strengthen your BEQ to achieve more accurate self-analysis, improved awareness, and effective functioning that creates predictable and positive results immediately.

I’m not interested in having a great career or climbing a corporate ladder or being inside much at all, actually. I don’t like to stay with things too long, either. I’ve worked as a short line cook, a firefighter and a dolphin trainer among other things. So, when the ladies at the Good Grief senior living center offer me a short term job as the photographer for the risqué nature calendar they want to pose for – to cross it off of Miss Agnes’s bucket list – I am all in. A few online photography courses later and I am ready to roll. Unfortunately, the guide of our choice, my sister’s fiancé, Bain, is all booked up. So he gets us his brother, Hoover, instead. Hoover and I have a bit of history, but he is as boring as the day is long and I couldn’t be less interested. Everything is going as planned until Miss Agnes decides she actually has being a photographer on her bucket list, Miss Harriet comes down with a severe case of sunburn on her nether regions and Miss Gertrude runs off with her favorite narrator. Suddenly I’m the star of the risqué calendar, Miss Agnes is taking my picture and Hoover…well, Hoover disapproves of pretty much everything, and he hates me, too. I want to fire him, but Miss Agnes has other plans… Hoover I thought I was leading a tour to show the ladies Idaho’s scenic places and wildlife. I was misinformed, although Kori equals wild life. Way too wild for me. I mean, show the woman a mud puddle and she wants to skinny dip in it. Then, Miss Agnes decides that I should be in the calendar too, and I have an eighty year old woman explaining to me what a speedo is… I’m on to Miss Agnes’s plans, but I’m not sure Kori and I are strong enough to fight the tide… Listen to Jay Dyess perform this book - for FREE - on YouTube on the Say with Jay channel. Reviews for Me and the Dreamy Doomsday: ★★★★★ "What a light, funny, friendly and romantic cozy read. Jessie Gussman did it again! I couldn’t put the book down until I completed it. Some books tend to drag, but not this one. If you follow Jessie online or through her weekly emails, there are some surprises in the book. You’ll have to read it to find out what they are. I highly recommend this book." - Colleen ★★★★★ "So many of this author's books hit me in areas I haven't examined. Ouch! This is a very good book! I highly recommend it." - Amber ★★★★★ "This is one of my favorite authors and I haven't found a series by her that I dislike." - Pam ★★★★★ "Me and the Dreamy Doomsday is another zany, small town, romantic comedy from Jessie Gussman. Once again we meet Miss Agnes and her bucket list. Miss Agnes is still matchmaking as she hires a guide and a photographer for her risqué calendar shoot in the Idaho wilds. You will not want to miss this well written adventure with these charismatic characters. I could not put it down!" - Bernadette ★★★★★ "Jessie's writing strikes my funny bone and this story is no exception." - S.Neilsen Books in the Sweet, Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief, Idaho series: Me and the Cute Catastrophe Me and the Tidy Tornado Me and the Helpful Hurricane Me and the Sweet Snowstorm Me and the Dreamy Doomsday

Book excerpt: In June 1941 a pair of British scientists boarded a plane for America with World War II raging all around them. They carried a precious commodity—penicillin—and the knowledge that it would change history. Once the U.S. government had been debriefed, the Office of Science Research and Development, in conjunction with British counterparts, assumed control, and penicillin became a top-secret matter of national security, second in importance only to the atomic bomb. In Cold War Resistance Marc Landas uncovers the dark history behind the discovery, production, and distribution of penicillin and other antibiotics. In 1949 the United States embargoed any material deemed of “strategic importance,” including antibiotics, from going to Communist countries, effectively shutting off the Soviet Union from a modern medical miracle. The Soviets responded by creating satellite antibiotic factories in Warsaw Pact countries that produced subpar antibiotics, which soon led to antibiotic resistance. Today, the number of effective antibiotics available is dwindling, and the state of antibiotic resistance is worsening. The Cold War played a critical role in fostering this resistance, as Landas argues in this pathbreaking history of the international struggle over antibiotics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If our lives are built on the foundation of the Word of GOD, it will be that we will seek Him more and more. We will want to honor Him in as many venues as possible. I think if Jesus, the Christ of GOD, was here today, He would be using every platform available to declare His Word. Jesus lives through His Word, so the more it is honored and declared, the more He is glorified. For the most part, GOD'S Word has been ignored lately. When this great country of ours was founded by Christian fathers, the Bible was the textbook children learned to read out of at school. Then we became too prideful and sophisticated to keep Christ central. We started relying on ourselves and our inventions and strayed from our first love. As Hosea rightly proclaimed, "Thou hast gone a whoring from thy GOD." We have "cast off the thing that is good and are deeply corrupted." He continues his rebuke, warning Israel of GOD'S wrath. It is the same for us today. GOD will visit us for our sins, and our "glory shall fly away as a bird" (Hos. 9:11). The message is always the same: return unto your Maker. We are like children following every pied piper on jump street. Hopefully, with more chapters on our King and Savior Jesus Christ, we will flee to His open arms We do not want to hear "The glory is departed," not from our country or any country. No, we want the King's glory to rain down upon us. Hosea's beautiful words remind us, "According to their pasture, so were they filled. They were filled, and their heart was exalted. Therefore, have they forgotten Me. O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself but in Me is thine help. I will be thy King. Where is any other that may save thee?" (Hos. 13:6, 9, 10).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evidence presented in the recently released Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggests strongly that continued failure to make meaningful cuts to greenhouse gas emissions could bring about disastrous results for the human community, especially for future generations. Summing up the findings of AR5, Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC, has stated that our persistent inaction on climate change presents a grave threat to the very social stability of human systems. The Anthropocene Project attempts to make philosophical sense of this, examining the reasons for the inaction highlighted by the IPCC, and suggests the normative bases for overcoming it. Williston identifies that we are now in the human agethe Anthropocenebut he argues that this is no mere geological marker. It is instead best viewed as the latest permutation of an already existing moral and political project rooted in Enlightenment values. The author shows that it can be fruitful to do climate ethics with this focus because in so many aspects of our culture we already endorse broadly Enlightenment values about progress, equality, and the value of knowledge. But these values must be robustly instantiated in the dispositions of moral agents, and so we require a climate ethics emphasizing the virtues of justice, truthfulness, and rational hope. One of the books most original claims is that our moral failure on this issue is, in large part, the product of motivated irrationality on the part of the world's most prosperous people. We have failed to live up to our commitments to justice and truthfulness because we are, respectively, morally weak and self-deceived. Understanding this provides the basis for the rational hope that we might yet find a way to avoid climate catastrophe.

Book excerpt: Are we in imminent danger of extinction? Yes, we probably are, argues John Leslie in his chilling account of the dangers facing the human race as we approach the second millenium. The End of the World is a sobering assessment of the many disasters that scientists have predicted and speculated on as leading to apocalypse. In the first comprehensive survey, potential catastrophes - ranging from deadly diseases to high-energy physics experiments - are explored to help us understand the risks. One of the greatest threats facing humankind, however, is the insurmountable fact that we are a relatively young species, a risk which is at the heart of the 'Doomsday Argument'. This argument, if correct, makes the dangers we face more serious than we could have ever imagined. This more than anything makes the arrogance and ignorance of politicians, and indeed philosophers, so disturbing as they continue to ignore the manifest dangers facing future generations.
