Download or read book Let us Understand Mathematics-KG and Class 1 written by Harinder Mahajan and published by Harinder Mahajan. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of books based on the NCERT syllabus and research on the teaching of mathematics. As in India, most schools do not have Kindergarten. This book is based on the syllabus for both classes. The teacher in the schools that have kindergarten can decide what to cover in kindergarten and class 1. Teachers in the schools that do not have kindergarten can go at a faster pace as the students there are older(5 years). The focus here is on an understanding of concepts and procedures. The concepts and procedures are presented by manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols and videos that enhance their learning. Opportunities are provided for communication, translation from one mode to another, and applications to daily life. The teachers should use manipulatives that are available or can be made and use situations for exercises that are familiar to the children in the class. As the schools in developing countries have a paucity of resources, we will use sticks for activities with number concepts. The sticks can be replaced by abacus or unifix cubes. The schools that can afford should provide materials such as counters, unifix cubes, pattern blocks, geometrical models, geoboards, fake money, and use these for explaining concepts and procedures. Or teachers can make models of different 2-D and 3–D shapes using cardboard and use dot paper instead of Geoboard. The students can be asked to bring buttons, scissors, and empty boxes, containers of different shapes and sizes from home. All children should at least have 100 sticks of the same length and rubber bands(they can buy pop sticks or toothpicks) and dot paper. As for most teachers, the textbook is the curriculum. This book is a teaching guide cum workbook for students. As the children have not yet developed the reading skills, the concepts, operations, and word problems should be learned and tested orally first. The exercises with manipulatives and oral work are included to facilitate that. Some activity sheets are also provided that can be printed and used by students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part of a revised series of books based on research on the teaching of mathematics for class 4 in India earlier published on www.vidyaonline.net. This covers the NCERT syllabus for class 4. The focus here is on laying a foundation for further learning of mathematics and understanding of concepts and procedures. Concepts are presented by videos, manipulatives, pictures, real-world situations, spoken and written words, and symbols. Automaticity (answering without thinking) of multiplication and division facts are emphasized. The teachers should provide more practice if necessary for mastery of the concepts, and procedures and use situations for exercises that are familiar to the children in the class. Ample opportunities are provided for applications of mathematics to real-world situations, reasoning, communication, and problem solving. The schools that can afford should provide concrete manipulatives such as counters, geometrical models, tangram pieces, blocks, geoboards, balances, fraction pieces, graphs, scissors, ropes. The schools that cannot afford teachers and/or students can make some of these and improvise for others. For example, they can make tangram pieces, 3-D models, balance, use dot paper for Geoboard, draw small circles for counters, use fraction chart for fraction pieces. Some activity sheets are provided that can be removed and used. Answers to selected exercises are provided.

Book Synopsis Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12 by : John Hattie
Download or read book Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12 written by John Hattie and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics winter book club book! Rich tasks, collaborative work, number talks, problem-based learning, direct instruction...with so many possible approaches, how do we know which ones work the best? In Visible Learning for Mathematics, six acclaimed educators assert it’s not about which one—it’s about when—and show you how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year’s worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school. That’s a high bar, but with the amazing K-12 framework here, you choose the right approach at the right time, depending upon where learners are within three phases of learning: surface, deep, and transfer. This results in "visible" learning because the effect is tangible. The framework is forged out of current research in mathematics combined with John Hattie’s synthesis of more than 15 years of education research involving 300 million students. Chapter by chapter, and equipped with video clips, planning tools, rubrics, and templates, you get the inside track on which instructional strategies to use at each phase of the learning cycle: Surface learning phase: When—through carefully constructed experiences—students explore new concepts and make connections to procedural skills and vocabulary that give shape to developing conceptual understandings. Deep learning phase: When—through the solving of rich high-cognitive tasks and rigorous discussion—students make connections among conceptual ideas, form mathematical generalizations, and apply and practice procedural skills with fluency. Transfer phase: When students can independently think through more complex mathematics, and can plan, investigate, and elaborate as they apply what they know to new mathematical situations. To equip students for higher-level mathematics learning, we have to be clear about where students are, where they need to go, and what it looks like when they get there. Visible Learning for Math brings about powerful, precision teaching for K-12 through intentionally designed guided, collaborative, and independent learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a game changer! Strengths-Based Teaching and Learning in Mathematics: 5 Teaching Turnarounds for Grades K- 6 goes beyond simply providing information by sharing a pathway for changing practice. . . Focusing on our students’ strengths should be routine and can be lost in the day-to-day teaching demands. A teacher using these approaches can change the trajectory of students’ lives forever. All teachers need this resource! Connie S. Schrock Emporia State University National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics President, 2017-2019 NEW COVID RESOURCES ADDED: A Parent’s Toolkit to Strengths-Based Learning in Math is now available on the book’s companion website to support families engaged in math learning at home. This toolkit provides a variety of home-based activities and games for families to engage in together. Your game plan for unlocking mathematics by focusing on students’ strengths. We often evaluate student thinking and their work from a deficit point of view, particularly in mathematics, where many teachers have been taught that their role is to diagnose and eradicate students’ misconceptions. But what if instead of focusing on what students don’t know or haven’t mastered, we identify their mathematical strengths and build next instructional steps on students’ points of power? Beth McCord Kobett and Karen S. Karp answer this question and others by highlighting five key teaching turnarounds for improving students’ mathematics learning: identify teaching strengths, discover and leverage students’ strengths, design instruction from a strengths-based perspective, help students identify their points of power, and promote strengths in the school community and at home. Each chapter provides opportunities to stop and consider current practice, reflect, and transfer practice while also sharing · Downloadable resources, activities, and tools · Examples of student work within Grades K–6 · Real teachers’ notes and reflections for discussion It’s time to turn around our approach to mathematics instruction, end deficit thinking, and nurture each student’s mathematical strengths by emphasizing what makes them each unique and powerful.

Book excerpt: A little girl pitches in to help her tía save up for a big old car — and take the whole family to the beach — in a story told with warmth and sweetness. Tía Isa wants a car. A shiny green car the same color as the ocean, with wings like a swooping bird. A car to take the whole family to the beach. But saving is hard when everything goes into two piles — one for here and one for Helping Money, so that family members who live far away might join them someday. While Tía Isa saves, her niece does odd jobs for neighbors so she can add her earnings to the stack. But even with her help, will they ever have enough? Meg Medina’s simple, genuine story about keeping in mind those who are far away is written in lovely, lyrical prose and brought to life through Claudio Muñoz’s charming characters.
