Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of this book are in my first attempts to understand psychology as a post-war student in the Cambridge of the late 1940s. Sir Frederic Bartlett and his colleagues in the Psychology Department were talking and writing about the concept of the skill as the fundamental unit of behaviour. This made entire sense to me but not apparently to very many other people because the movement dwindled rapidly with the retirement of Sir Frederic in 1952. It got lost within performance studies which were essentially behaviouristic and stimulus-response in origin, a quite different style of thinking from the gestalt approach of skill psychology. This is not a simple dichotomy of course and skill psychology does go some way towards the analytic approach in accepting that a science needs to have a basic element, a unit from which the complexities of real behaviour can be constructed. into which it can be analysed and in terms of which it can be described and understood. The trick is to pick the right unit and I think that skills is an appropriate unit for human behaviour. Note the plural, although these units are elements they are not identical any more than the ninety-odd elements of the physical world are identical. The issue is sometimes clarified by considering the analogy with the attempt to describe a house. The simplest observable elements here are the brick. the piece of stone or the piece of wood.

Book Synopsis From the Titanic to the Challenger by : Susan Davis Herring
Download or read book From the Titanic to the Challenger written by Susan Davis Herring and published by New York : Garland Pub.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuous reporting and study of human-induced disasters in this technological age makes this a worthwhile reference. This covers a span of 80 years and over 100 incidents--from the 1907 collapse of a bridge over the St. Lawrence River to the Chernobyl plant explosion in 1986. Covered here are dozens of airplane accidents, the major space program failures (including Russian ones), and a number of nuclear-reactor mishaps. Arrangement is by general topic, 16 in all, with the individual disaster listed within its topic. Bibliographic citations are given chronologically, with book citations preceding article citations. A brief annotation for each citation gives an idea of coverage, but there is no general description of each disaster to orient the researcher unfamiliar with the incident. A chronological listing of disasters and several useful indexes are also given. Highly recommended for all reference collections.
Book Synopsis A Human Error Approach to Aviation Accident Analysis by : Douglas A. Wiegmann
Download or read book A Human Error Approach to Aviation Accident Analysis written by Douglas A. Wiegmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human error is implicated in nearly all aviation accidents, yet most investigation and prevention programs are not designed around any theoretical framework of human error. Appropriate for all levels of expertise, the book provides the knowledge and tools required to conduct a human error analysis of accidents, regardless of operational setting (i.e. military, commercial, or general aviation). The book contains a complete description of the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), which incorporates James Reason's model of latent and active failures as a foundation. Widely disseminated among military and civilian organizations, HFACS encompasses all aspects of human error, including the conditions of operators and elements of supervisory and organizational failure. It attracts a very broad readership. Specifically, the book serves as the main textbook for a course in aviation accident investigation taught by one of the authors at the University of Illinois. This book will also be used in courses designed for military safety officers and flight surgeons in the U.S. Navy, Army and the Canadian Defense Force, who currently utilize the HFACS system during aviation accident investigations. Additionally, the book has been incorporated into the popular workshop on accident analysis and prevention provided by the authors at several professional conferences world-wide. The book is also targeted for students attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University which has satellite campuses throughout the world and offers a course in human factors accident investigation for many of its majors. In addition, the book will be incorporated into courses offered by Transportation Safety International and the Southern California Safety Institute. Finally, this book serves as an excellent reference guide for many safety professionals and investigators already in the field.
