Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Practical Physics, Vol. 1 The work of which this is the first volume took its origin in the felt necessity for systematising the work in our physical laboratory. We first of all commenced by using short manuscript accounts of the various processes and instruments for the use of our students. This, although satisfactory as far as it went, was found insufficient, and had to be supplemented by references to books not always accessible. Learning from various quarters the desirability of a simple yet systematic treatise on physical instruments, we were at length induced to undertake the task ourselves. It was first, proposed to publish the whole in one volume, but as the matter grew under our hands it was suggested to us by Professor Sir Henry Roscoe that it might be advantageously published in three volumes. This arrangement will, we imagine, be convenient for students who wish to cultivate some particular branch of physical inquiry. The present volume will, we hope, be followed in due course by one on "Electricity and Magnetism;" and our work will be rendered complete by a third on "Heat, Light, and Sound." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physics: Mechanics (Including Hydrostatics) And Light Some years ago a body of educational leaders declared themselves in favor of teaching physics by means of experiments involving exact measurement and weighing by the pupils in grammar-schools. To the author of this book, well aware of the difficulty of establishing and maintaining a thorough course of quantitative experimental work in academics and high schools, the new proposition did not at first commend itself. Difficulties of various kinds, financial, mechanical, pedagogical, appeared in the way. Indeed, the author at first expressed, somewhat publicly, the opinion that grammar-school physics must be lecture-table physics, an hour or two a week devoted by the teacher to the performance and discussion of simple experiments in the presence of the pupils. He thought, and still thinks, that such a course would be not unprofitable. There are several books describing this kind of work, and their number is rapidly increasing. But the advocates of the lecture-table method of science-teaching cannot claim for it the disciplinary advantage and the power of bringing the pupil into close quarters with physical facts and laws, that belong to a properly-conducted course of laboratory work by the pupils themselves. Of the various branches into which Physics is divided. Mechanics has an undoubted claim to the first place, from the simplicity and exactness of its laws, the readiness with which they can be demonstrated, and the multitude of practical illustrations of them which meet us on every side in the ordinary movements of life, in games, and in work. The study of Chemistry or of Electricity may be more amusing and attractive on account of the brilliant experiments associated with it, but the exact explanation of chemical and electrical phenomena is far less easy and far less certain than that of mechanical laws, and is, indeed, hardly within the grasp of minds previously untrained in scientific methods and ideas. An endeavour is made in this book to explain some of the properties of matter, Newtons Laws of Motion, and the modern conceptions of Energy and Work, in such a manner as involves only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics.
