Ils dormirent longtemps et, au réveil, s'aperçurent que les siècles étaient passés comme le temps d'une nuit et que le christianisme était devenu religion officielle de l'Etat romain par l'édit de Théodose. Les sept nobles, reconnus, auraient pu être couverts d'honneurs. Heureux de la Victoire du Christ, ils choisirent le sommeil éternel dans la béatitude. La merveille se répandit et s'enrichit de versions plus miraculeuses les unes que les autres. On y vit la preuve de la résurrection des corps. Grégoire de Tours, qui avait été ambassadeur à Constantinople, rédigea l'histoire, la chrétienté vit se multiplier les lieux de culte aux Sept Dormants, de la Bretagne à la Bavière, des Pyrénées au sud de l'Italie. Au XIIIe siècle, le moine génois Jacques de Voragine reprit l'histoire dans La Légende dorée, maintes fois traduite et illustrée. Le Coran, " dernier livre révélé ", ouvre la célèbre sourate XVIII, par la même narration, appelée justement " la Caverne ". Plusieurs orientalistes ont remarqué cette " coïncidence ". Dans un souci de vulgarisation qui n'enlève rien à sa valeur scientifique, l'ouvrage de François Jourdan présente une utile synthèse sur une tradition qui connut autrefois une large diffusion et fit l'objet de nombreuses études. Mais, alors que, dans le passé, chrétiens et musulmans étudièrent cette tradition chacun de leur côté, ici est opérée la confrontation de deux sources musulmanes très différentes avec une ancienne version chrétienne syriaque sans doute connue des chrétiens d'Arabie au VIIe siècle.

Placing the pilgrims’ practices and experiences centre stage, scholars from history, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, and art history examine historical and contemporary hajj and non-hajj pilgrimage to sites outside and within Europe. The interlocutors are European-born Muslims, converts to Islam, and Muslim migrants to Europe, in addition to people who identify themselves with other faiths. Most interlocutors reside in Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and Norway. This book identifies four courses of developments: Muslims resident in Europe continue to travel to Mecca and Medina, and to visit shrine sites located elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.
