Les sans feu ni lieu parviennent même à créer des territoires en imposant leurs pratiques de la ville ; bien qu'exclus, ils sont de véritables acteurs urbains.

But unlike other markets, the housing market is able to profoundly transform the socioeconomic structure and the image of a city. Very often, changes in urban space are the result of the imperceptible operation of a multitude of micro-transformations which act with such great energy and decisiveness that they can transform the ‘DNA’ of entire urban neighborhoods. These qualitative novelties, unpredictable and non-deducible on the basis of the previous properties, are defined emergences. Namely emergence means a ‘pattern formation’ characterized by a self-organizing process driven by non-linear dynamics. This book explores housing market emergence in light of three different phenomena: search for housing, social polarization, and gentrification. The book is divided into two parts. The first part presents contributions on modelling emergence of different phenomena, formalised in multi-agent systems. The second part gathers empirical research and analyses aimed at supporting the findings of the models.

Such suffering is a matter of social concern, but it is rarely a matter of discussion in the social sciences, political theory or philosophy. This book aims to change this by making social suffering central to an interdisciplinary critical theory of society. The author advances the various contemporary debates about social suffering, connecting their epistemological and political stakes. He provides tools for recasting these debates, constructs a consistent conception of social suffering, and thereby equips us with a better understanding of our social world, and more accurate models of social critique. The book contributes to contemporary debates about social suffering in sociology, social psychology, political theory and philosophy. Renault argues that social suffering should be taken seriously in social theory as well as in social critique and provides a systematic account of the ways in which social suffering could be conceptualised. He goes on to inquire into the political uses of references to social suffering, surveys contemporary controversies in the social sciences, and distinguishes between economical, socio-medical, sociological, and psychoanalytic approaches, before proposing an integrative model and discussing the implications for social critique. He claims that the notion of social suffering captures some of the most specific features of the contemporary social question and that the most appropriate approach to social suffering is that of an interdisciplinary critical theory of society.

The book depicts the journey of women as they experience brutal separations and make heart-wrenching decisions, but also as they make acquaintances and find new opportunities. The first-person accounts collected here demonstrate that the reasons behind these women's decision to leave are anything but simple and linear: they combine various forms of persecution and oppression with a desire for autonomy.The book further explores the daily lives of women in reception centres as they wait for a Europe that rejects them to acknowledge their presence. At the same time, this study shows that these women are taking charge of their own destinies and journeys. This accordingly puts the space of everyday life front and centre. Such a space acts as an impediment to these women's journeys: it generates a "moralscape" of waiting, which plays a key role in these women's daily lives. However, it can also help these women gain greater autonomy, thus empowering them. Camille Schmoll is Research Director at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Fellow of the Institut Convergences Migrations, and a member of the Géographie-cités research centre, France. A feminist political geographer, she is especially interested in gender and migration issues, critical migration studies, and reflexivity within migration scholarship. Her work explores migration from an ethnographic perspective, with a particular focus on the making of border-places (e.g. islands, cities, neighbourhoods) and the trajectories of migrant women. She was Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales from 2019 to 2022, and has authored, co-authored and co-edited several books in French, Italian and English
