Book Synopsis Effective Actuarial Methods by : M. J. Goovaerts
Download or read book Effective Actuarial Methods written by M. J. Goovaerts and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1990 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades actuarial research has developed in a more applied direction. Although the original risk models generally served as convenient and sometimes tractable mathematical examples of general probabilistic and/or statistical theories, nowadays models and techniques are encountered that can be considered to be typically actuarial. Examples include ordering of risks by dangerousness, credibility theory and techniques based on IBNR models. Not only does this book present the underlying mathematics of these subjects, but it also deals with the practical application of the techniques. In order to provide results based on real insurance portfolios, use is made of three software packages, namely SLIC performing stop-loss insurance calculations for individual and collective risk models, CRAC dealing with actuarial applications of credibility theory, and LORE giving IBNR-based estimates for loss reserves. Worked-out examples illustrate the theoretical results. This book is intended for use in preparing university actuarial exams, and contains many exercises with varying levels of complexity. It is valuable as a textbook for students in actuarial sciences during their last year of study. Due to the emphasis on applications and because of the worked-out examples on real portfolio data, it is also useful for practising actuaries to guide them in interpreting their own results.
Book Synopsis Total Confinement by : Lorna A. Rhodes
Download or read book Total Confinement written by Lorna A. Rhodes and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-02-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ethnographically rich, thick with gritty details and original insights, Rhodes's revelatory book about US prisons--those who are incarcerated in them and those who run them--should be read by everyone who cares about social justice and the nature of power."—Emily Martin, author of Flexible Bodies "Thank you, Lorna Rhodes, for taking us to where the 'worst of the worst' are kept out of sight and out of mind in the new millennium. This powerful ethnography of the correctional high tech machine reveals how institutional power suffocates individual agency and redefines rationality and insanity. Good, bad and evil fall by the wayside."—Philippe Bourgois, author of In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio "A truly remarkable book. The inside look at supermax confinement alone is worth the price of admission, and the prose sometimes verges on poetry. This is meticulous scholarship."—Hans Toch, author of Living in Prison

Book Synopsis Cross-national Comparative Research by : Hans-Jürgen Andreß
Download or read book Cross-national Comparative Research written by Hans-Jürgen Andreß and published by Springer VS. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-National Comparative Research is concerned with observing social phenomena across countries, and with developing explanations for their similarities and differences. This Special Issue focuses on the use of Cross-National Comparative Research to study the effects of national and sub-national contexts on behaviors and attitudes of individual actors. Moreover, it is of interest how behaviors and attitudes at the individual level lead to national and sub-national outcomes at the meso and macro levels. How do immigration policies affect migrants’ well-being? Does the number of divorcees in a country influence individual divorce risks? Are human values universal, or do they vary from one country to another? Under which conditions is political protest triggered, and when does it lead to revolutionary changes within society? These and other questions are typical of cross-national comparative analyses that seek to ascertain how upper-level (macro, meso) contexts influence micro-level phenomena, and how outcomes at the individual level are once more reflected at the meso and macro levels. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Andreß, Prof. Dr. Detlef Fetchenhauer and Prof. Dr. Heiner Meulemann teach sociology and social psychology at the University in Cologne, Germany.
Download or read book Galaxy written by Stuart Clark and published by Quercus Books. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Stuart Clark's lucid text and nearly 500 cutting-edge images, GALAXY investigates every aspect of the Milky Way - from its place in the Universe to its large-scale anatomy, from its history to its future. We approach the Milky Way from the very edge of the Universe, threading our way through massive conglomerations of galaxies gathered like grains of dust on a veil of cobwebs. Out here we can survey the thriving diversity of galaxy types and galactic life. Homing in on our destination, we skirt fleets of satellite galaxies, orbiting our Galaxy like the Moon orbits the Earth, before plunging through the Milky Way's spiral arms on a course that will ultimately lead us to its dark heart - a gravitational maelstrom of white dwarfs, neutron stars and hypergiants, all in the thrall of a supermassive black hole.As we tour the Galaxy the rhythms of stellar life unfold before our eyes: we pass through dark clouds of dust and gas incubating clusters of embryonic stars, we discover spectacular emission nebulae blazing in the fierce radiation of stellar newborns, we watch dying stars bloom and fade as planetary nebulae, or tear themselves apart as supernovae and we survey the planets and moons of our Solar System.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference of the European Institute for social security, on the social security and the economic crisis, prepared by its Colloque, held in Tole do in 1981, was held from the 30th of September untill the 2nd of October in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. The Yearbook 1982 contains the reports presented at the Conference in Zoetermeer, which was opened by the Dutch Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, L. de Graaf. The Conference had before it ten national reports and seven synthesis reports (Paul 0 'Higgins, Benefits in general; Jan Pierik, Financing; Winfried Schmahl, Pensions; Yves Saint Jours, Health; Pasquale Sandulli, Unemployment; Martin Partington, Minimum income and family allowances; Jef van Langendonck, Social Security and Economic Insecurity). Most unfortunately Paul O'Higgins did not deliver the written text of his report and we regret that for that reason, we cannot include his report in this yearbook. The Conference, which got the hospitality of the Dutch Social Security Council in Zoetermeer, was very well organised and financed by the Dutch social security institutions and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The Institute wants to express its sincere gratitude to Mr. J. Oosterhuis and his collegues and to the ladies of the secretariat Annemie Dancot, Jose Goes, Joke Torenburg and Lisette Veldkamp.
