Download or read book Recherches sur l'histoire de la France Médiéval written by Robert-Henri Bautier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of articles by Robert-Henri Bautier deals with the political and institutional history of France between the 6th and 12th centuries, and is above all concerned with the changing extent of the rulers' power from the rise of the Carolingians onwards. A subsequent volume will focus on the Capetians, while a further pair of volumes deal with economic history. The first studies here examine two general topics: the emergence of Paris as the undisputed capital of France, and the ceremony of Royal coronation and consecration. The following articles, on Carolingian France, reconsider the significance of the battle of Roncevaux and the importance of the region of Neustria, then study the decomposition of the Carolingian empire in Southern France and Catalonia. The last group is concerned with various aspects of the re-expansion of central power under the early Capetian kings and, finally, with the evolution of one of the fundamental organs of medieval municipal government, the échevinage.
Book Synopsis France and the Cult of the Sacred Heart by : Raymond Jonas
Download or read book France and the Cult of the Sacred Heart written by Raymond Jonas and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-09-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a richly layered and beautifully illustrated narrative, Raymond Jonas tells the fascinating and surprisingly little-known story of the Sacr -Coeur, or Sacred Heart. The highest point in Paris and a celebrated tourist destination, the white-domed basilica of Sacr -Coeur on Montmartre is a key monument both to French Catholicism and to French national identity. Jonas masterfully reconstructs the history of the devotion responsible for the basilica, beginning with the apparition of the Sacred Heart to Marguerite Marie Alacoque in the seventeenth century, through the French Revolution and its aftermath, to the construction of the monumental church that has loomed over Paris since the end of the nineteenth century. Jonas focuses on key moments in the development of the cult: the founding apparition, its invocation during the plague of Marseilles, its adaptation as a royalist symbol during the French Revolution, and its elevation to a central position in Catholic devotional and political life in the crisis surrounding the Franco-Prussian War. He draws on a wealth of archival sources to produce a learned yet accessible narrative that encompasses a remarkable sweep of French politics, history, architecture, and art.
Download or read book Sacred Royalty written by Jean Hani and published by The Matheson Trust. This book was released on 2011 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader on an intellectually and spiritually rewarding journey 'from the pharaoh to the most Christian king'. In his study of sacred royalty, Jean Hani explores a wide range of traditional societies, and demonstrates how royalty, insofar as it maintained its sacral character, integrated society into the cosmic order. Through this integration regal authority traditionally served as a reflection of the heavenly order, whatever be the particular character of the revealed traditon within which that authority functions. --Book cover.
Download or read book The Sacred Body written by Nicola Laneri and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human body represents the perfect element for relating communities of the living with the divine. This is clearly evident in the mythological stories that recount the creation of humans by deities among ancient and contemporaneous societies across a very broad geographical environment. Thus, parts of selected human body parts or skeletal elements can then become an ideal proxy for connecting with the supernatural as demonstrated by the cult of the human skulls among Neolithic communities in the Near East as well as the cult of the relics of Christian saints. The aim of this volume is to undertake a cross-cultural investigation of the role played in antiquity by humans and human remains in creating forms of relationality with the divine. Such an approach will highlight how the human body can be envisioned as part of a broader materialization of religious beliefs that is based on connecting different realms of materiality in perceiving the supernatural by the community of the livings. Case studies on ritual aspects of funerary practices is presented, emphasising the varied roles of body parts in mortuary rituals and as relics. Other papers take a wider look at regional practices in various time periods and cultural contexts to explore the central role of the corpse in the negotiation of death in human culture.

Download or read book Exercices d'histoire des religions written by Philippe Borgeaud and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercices d’histoire des religions is a collection of the most important articles published by Philippe Borgeaud during his career as the professor of history of religions at the University of Geneva (Switzerland). These nineteen studies showcase the many reflections of the Swiss scholar of religion on the categories and tools used to describe and compare such evanescent concepts as “religions”, “myths” and “rituals”, and his methodology for a critical and comparative study of ancient and modern religions. Through them, readers will gain a clear understanding of the importance such an approach can wield in the contemporary discussions and dissents about religions.

Book Synopsis Religion in History / La religion dans l’histoire by : Michel Despland
Download or read book Religion in History / La religion dans l’histoire written by Michel Despland and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1992-03-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the concept of “religion” in Western tradition has intrigued scholars for years. This important collection of eighteen essays brings further light to the ongoing debate. Three of the invited participants, W.C. Smith, M. Despland and E. Feil, has each previously written impressive books treating this subject; the last two acknowledged the impact and continuing influence of Smith’s work, The Meaning and End of Religion. An introduction and a recapitulation of Smith’s contribution as a scholar set the stage for a retrospective look at the published literature. Contributors then examine the transformation of words (the classical religio to the modern religion), particularities of religion in nineteenth-century France, Troeltsch’s concept of religion, the study of religion from an Asian point of view and the categorization of “World Religions.” The concluding essays elaborate contemporary anthropological, cross-disciplinary, semiological, deconstructive and psychoanalytical methodological approaches to the concept and study of “religion.” Exploring critically different aspects of the concept and study of religion, these provocative essays typically reflect the methodological pluralism currently existing in the field of Religious Studies. Of interest to scholars and students alike, this collection also contains a complete bibliography of W.C. Smith’s publications.

Book Synopsis The Holy Portolano / Le Portulan sacré by : Michele Bacci

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
