Book excerpt: Valjean volunteers to execute Javert himself, and Enjolras grants permission. Valjean takes Javert out of sight, and then shoots into the air while letting him go. Marius mistakenly believes that Valjean has killed Javert. As the barricade falls, Valjean carries off the injured and unconscious Marius. All the other students are killed. Valjean escapes through the sewers, carrying Marius's body. He evades a police patrol, and reaches an exit gate but finds it locked. Thénardier emerges from the darkness. Valjean recognizes Thénardier, but Thénardier does not recognize Valjean. Thinking Valjean a murderer lugging his victim's corpse, Thénardier offers to open the gate for money. As he searches Valjean and Marius's pockets, he surreptitiously tears off a piece of Marius's coat so he can later find out his identity. Thénardier takes the thirty francs he finds, opens the gate, and allows Valjean to leave, expecting Valjean's emergence from the sewer will distract the police who have been pursuing him.

Book excerpt: The story begins in 1815 in Digne, as the peasant Jean Valjean, just released from 19 years' imprisonment in the Bagne of Toulon-five for stealing bread for his starving sister and her family and fourteen more for numerous escape attempts-is turned away by innkeepers because his yellow passport marks him as a former convict. He sleeps on the street, angry and bitter.Digne's benevolent Bishop Myriel gives him shelter. At night, Valjean runs off with Myriel's silverware. When the police capture Valjean, Myriel pretends that he has given the silverware to Valjean and presses him to take two silver candlesticks as well, as if he had forgotten to take them. The police accept his explanation and leave. Myriel tells Valjean that his life has been spared for God, and that he should use money from the silver candlesticks to make an honest man of himself.

Book excerpt: Introducing one of the most famous characters in literature, Jean Valjean-the noble peasant imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread-Les Misérables ranks among the greatest novels of all time. In it, Victor Hugo takes readers deep into the Parisian underworld, immerses them in a battle between good and evil, and carries them to the barricades during the uprising of 1832 with a breathtaking realism that is unsurpassed in modern prose.Within his dramatic story are themes that capture the intellect and the emotions: crime and punishment, the relentless persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the amorality of the rogue Thénardier, and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. Les Misérables gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the French political and judicial systems, but the portrait that resulted is larger than life, epic in scope-an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart.

Book excerpt: Experience the dramatic and stirring continuation of Victor Hugo's literary masterpiece with "Les Misérables Volume IV - Saint-Denis." In this volume, Hugo brings readers into the heart of revolutionary Paris, where the personal and political realms collide with explosive consequences. "Saint-Denis" takes its name from the Parisian district that becomes the epicenter of the June Rebellion of 1832. This volume delves into the lives of its diverse cast of characters as they navigate love, loss, and the fight for justice amidst the turmoil of an uprising. Jean Valjean, the reformed ex-convict, strives to protect his beloved ward, Cosette, while Marius Pontmercy, the fervent young revolutionary, becomes deeply involved in the struggle for a better future. As the revolutionaries prepare to take their stand, the story intensifies with the build-up to the barricades and the inevitable clash with the authorities. The tension and drama of these moments are masterfully captured, immersing readers in the passion and desperation of those fighting for their ideals. Hugo's depiction of the barricades-both a physical and symbolic representation of resistance-serves as a powerful backdrop for the unfolding human drama. Central to this volume is the evolving relationship between Marius and Cosette. Their love story, fraught with obstacles and misunderstandings, is portrayed with tenderness and poignancy. Amidst the chaos and danger of the rebellion, their bond offers a glimmer of hope and humanity. The resilience of their love in the face of such adversity is a testament to the enduring power of human connection. Hugo's narrative also provides a vivid and detailed exploration of the political and social climate of the time. Through his intricate descriptions and profound insights, he paints a picture of a society in flux, grappling with issues of justice, inequality, and the quest for a better world. The portrayal of the revolutionary group Les Amis de l'ABC and their noble yet tragic stand at the barricades highlights the heroism and sacrifice of those who dared to dream of a brighter future. "Les Misérables Volume IV - Saint-Denis" is a compelling blend of action, romance, and social commentary. Hugo's eloquent prose and deep empathy for his characters bring this historical moment to life, making it both a thrilling and moving read. The themes of love, sacrifice, and the struggle for justice are explored with a depth and intensity that resonate across the ages. Perfect for readers who appreciate classic literature, historical drama, and tales of courage and resilience, "Saint-Denis" continues the epic narrative of "Les Misérables" with power and grace. Engage with this unforgettable volume and discover why Victor Hugo's work remains a touchstone of literary brilliance, offering profound reflections on the human condition and the enduring fight for justice.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Les Misrables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misrables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for the stage, television, and film, including a musical and a film adaptation of that musical.
