Book Synopsis Entryism and the Revolutionary Socialist Left in Britain by : Nicolas Sigoillot
Download or read book Entryism and the Revolutionary Socialist Left in Britain written by Nicolas Sigoillot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines entryism in the context of the revolutionary socialist left in Britain, from the inception of the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920 to the departure of Militant from the Labour Party in 1992. Entryism is a tactic of penetration of a political party by another, aimed at accomplishing objectives, the nature of which can change depending on the type of entry. This work shows to what extent there is not one type of entryism but several. The adopted methodology is chronological, with introductory chapters that study the context and the previous partial-only attempts to define entryism. The first part of the volume is dedicated to the relationship between the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Labour Party up until the middle of the 20th century. The following two parts are dedicated to British Trotskyists before and after the Second World War. In total, 17 organisations that have practiced entryism are examined. Through their objectives, practices, and results, this work intends to formulate an exhaustive typology of the tactic, which fills a definitional gap in political science and covers an aspect of Labour’s History that has only been partially covered. This volume will be of use to students and scholars interested in the history of the Labour Party and the Far Left in the United Kingdom.

Book Synopsis The Radical Tradition (Routledge Revivals) by : Richard Gombin
Download or read book The Radical Tradition (Routledge Revivals) written by Richard Gombin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, Richard Gombin’s book traces the recurrent attitudes in the history of the European revolutionary movement which have criticized socialist and communist parties for their authoritarian and bureaucratic tendencies, and which have stressed spontaneity and decentralization as the correct basis from which to change society. From a critique of Marx, through to an examination of Soviet practice under Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin as a factor in the disillusionment of the left with the methods of the Russian Revolution, Gombin’s study examines the concepts of ‘workers’ councils’ as they emerged in several countries after the First World War. This comparative study develops the idea of a ‘council communism’ as opposed to a ‘party communism’ which, he suggests, is the fundamental concept in the criticism of orthodox Communism from the left.

Book Synopsis Republicanism in Nineteenth-Century France, 1814–1871 by : Pamela Pilbeam
Download or read book Republicanism in Nineteenth-Century France, 1814–1871 written by Pamela Pilbeam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-02-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating survey of nineteenth-century republicanism, the first of its kind this century. It investigates why it was that although France was one of the first countries in modern Europe to become a republic in 1792, it was nearly a hundred years before a republic was acceptable to the majority. Pamela Pilbeam suggests that republicanism was a witch's brew of Enlightenment rationality, bloody memories and conflicting socialist expectations. The book concludes that the successful republic of 1871 used the rhetoric of democracy to conceal persistent elitism.

Download or read book Modern Representations of Sub-Saharan Africa written by Lori Maguire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how representations of African in the Anglophone West have changed in the post-imperial age. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in sub-Saharan Africa, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the transformation of the relationships with the West. Using a range of case studies from news media, maps, popular culture, film and TV the contributions assess how narrative and counter-narratives have developed and been received by their audiences in light of these changes. Examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of African Studies and Media and Cultural Studies.
