Book excerpt: CET OUVRAGE EXAMINE L'UTILISATION DES FEMMES PAR L'INSTITUTION MILITAIRE QUI, PENDANT LA GUERRE, SE CONFOND AVEC LE GOUVERNEMENT; IL S'INSCRIT DANS LA PROBLEMATIQUE DES 'GENDER STUDIES' ET, PLUS GENERALEMENT, DES ETUDES HISTORIQUES SUR LES FEMMES QUI ECLAIRENT LEUR ROLE ET LEUR PLACE COMME OBJET ET SUJET D'HISTOIRE ET MONTRENT QUE LA HIERARCHISATION DES RAPPORTS SOCIAUX DE SEXE S'APPUIE SUR DES REPRESENTATIONS SYMBOLIQUES ET DES CONCEPTS NORMATIFS QUI OCCULTENT LES POSITIONS ALTERNATIVES. EN 1914, LES SERVICES DES FEMMES FURENT POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS LARGEMENT ET OFFICIELLEMENT UTILISES SELON LES TROIS FOYERS DE CONVERGENCE ENTRE LES FEMMES ET L'INSTITUTION MILITAIRE QUE CONSTITUENT LES SERVICES INFIRMIERS, LES USINES D'ARMEMENT ET LES FORCES ARMEES. LA VIOLENCE FIT DONC ENTRER LES FEMMES DANS LA SPHERE PUBLIQUE ET BOULEVERSA LES PARADIGMES QUI REVELERENT LEUR FONCTION MENSONGERE ET REGULATRICE. CEPENDANT, LES INSTITUTIONS PATRIARCALES SUSCITERENT D'AUTRES MYTHES POUR NIER AUX FEMMES LEUR SPECIFICITE HUMAINE ET LES RE-ENFERMER DANS LE GYNECEE AU RETOUR DE LA PAIX. MALGRE UN RECUL SEVERE, LE CONFLIT HATA LE PROCESSUS DE DEMOCRATISATION POUR LES FEMMES QUI SE VOULURENT SUJETS D'HISTOIRE ET S'EFFORCERENT DE RESISTER A LA REINSTAURATION DE L'IDEOLOGIE DOMESTIQUE. LEUR PRESENCE DANS LA SPHERE PUBLIQUE NE PUT ETRE TOTALEMENT ERADIQUEE ET LA LENTE INFILTRATION DES FEMMES DANS LES BASTIONS MASCULINS DONT L'ARMEE REPRESENTE L'EPITOME, NE PUT ETRE ENDIGUEE. LA CONCLUSION S'EFFORCE DE PLACER LEUR AVANCEE EN REGARD DE LA POSITION ACTUELLE DES FEMMES DANS L'ARMEE ET DES JUGEMENTS DES DIVERS COURANTS FEMINISTES

Book excerpt: Examining changing role models for masculine identity--from cowboy in the 1950s to Terminator in the 1990s, from flesh-and-blood man to machine--this book suggests that men need new role models and that sufficient room needs to be left for the expression of male vulnerability, a psychic space that would accept attitudes and behaviors traditionally labeled as "feminine." This new model, Badinter argues, may reduce the profound effects of homophobia and misogyny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few moments in history when the division between the sexes seems as "natural" as during wartime: men go off to the "war front," while women stay behind on the "home front." But the very notion of the home front was an invention of the First World War, when, for the first time, "home" and "domestic" became adjectives that modified the military term "front." Such an innovation acknowledged the significant and presumably new contributions of civilians, especially women, to the war effort. Yet, as Susan Grayzel argues, throughout the war, traditional notions of masculinity and femininity survived, primarily through the maintenance of--and indeed reemphasis on--soldiering and mothering as the core of gender and national identities. Drawing on sources that range from popular fiction and war memorials to newspapers and legislative debates, Grayzel analyzes the effects of World War I on ideas about civic participation, national service, morality, sexuality, and identity in wartime Britain and France. Despite the appearance of enormous challenges to gender roles due to the upheavals of war, the forces of stability prevailed, she says, demonstrating the Western European gender system's remarkable resilience.

-- This volume commemorates the 40th anniversary of the University of Ottawa’s Department of Criminology, founded in 1968. It relates the history of the department from its origins to today, focusing on the theoretical debates that have influenced its critical and self reflexive approach to criminology. The contributions to this volume continue in that vein by questioning the traditional perspective of criminology on a variety of topics including police studies, mental health, political violence, suicide, and crime prevention. Rights and Voices reveals the significant role that the University of Ottawa has played in redefining criminology to advocate activism, social justice, and compassion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of professional women in positions of administrative responsibility illuminates women's changing relationship to the public sphere in France since the Revolution of 1789. Linda L. Clark traces several generations of French women in public administration, examining public policy and politics, attitudes towards gender, and women's work and education. Women's own perceptions and assessments of their positions illustrate changes in gender roles and women's relationship to the state. With seniority-based promotion, maternity leaves and the absence of the marriage bar, the situation of French women administrators invites comparison with their counterparts in other countries. Why has the profile of women's employment in France differed from that in the USA and the UK? This study gives unique insights into French social, political and cultural history, and the history of women during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It will interest scholars of European history and also specialists in women's studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the methodology of qualitative research in military studies. Since the end of the Cold War, the number of studies on military and society has grown substantially in substance, size and impact. However, only a tiny part of this bibliography deals in depth with the research methods used, especially in relation to qualitative methods. The data that form the basis of the researchers' analyses are often presented as if they were immediately available, rather than as a product of interaction between the researcher and those who participated in the research. Comprising essays by international scholars, the volume discusses the methodological questions raised by the use of qualitative research methodology in military settings. On the one hand, it focuses on the specificity of the military as a social context for research: the authors single out and discuss the particular field effects produced by institutional arrangements, norms and practices of the military. On the other, the authors proceed in an empirical manner: all methodological questions are addressed with regard to concrete situations of field research. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, research methods, sociology, anthropology, war and conflict studies and security studies in general.
