Book excerpt: Globalization is part of the fabric of our everyday lives. And yet we often view it as a threat to our identities, or even our very survival. This study offers a radically new vision of this phenomenon, one which goes completely against the way it is interpreted by neo-liberals or the anti-globalization movement.
Book Synopsis Material Approaches to Roman Magic by : Adam Parker
Download or read book Material Approaches to Roman Magic written by Adam Parker and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the new TRAC Themes in Roman Archaeology series seeks to push the research agendas of materiality and lived experience further into the study of Roman magic, a field that has, until recently, lacked object-focused analysis. Building on the pioneering studies in Boschung and Bremmer's (2015) Materiality of Magic, the editors of the present volume have collected contributions that showcase the value of richly-detailed, context-specific explorations of the magical practices of the Roman world. By concentrating primarily on the Imperial period and the western provinces, the various contributions demonstrate very clearly the exceptional range of influences and possibilities open to individuals who sought to use magical rituals to affect their lives in these specific contexts – something that would have been largely impossible in earlier periods of antiquity. Contributions are presented from a range of museum professionals, commercial archaeologists, university academics and postgraduate students, making a compelling case for strengthening lines of communication between these related areas of expertise.

Book Synopsis Troubles de l'apprentissage chez l'enfant by : LENOBLE Evelyne
Download or read book Troubles de l'apprentissage chez l'enfant written by LENOBLE Evelyne and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis New Horizons for Canada's Children/Horizons Nouveaux pour les Enfants du Canada by : B. W. Heise

This book was released on 1961-12-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Canadian Conference on Children, held in the province of Quebec in October, 1960, was the culmination of several years of planning and of three years' specific study of projects which dealt with existing programmes for children in Canada. Delegates came from provincial and national organizations and the Conference was supported by a large number of organizations connected with child health, welfare, and education. The programme of the Conference was divided into three sections: plenary sessions, group discussions of the projects, and group discussion of children under three headings: "the early years," "the middle years," and "the transition years." The whole programme covered children from birth to about the age of seventeen. The Proceedings includes the speeches presented at the plenary sessions (by Sir Geoffrey Vickers, Chairman of the Research Committee of the British Mental Health Research Fund; Dr. K.D. Naegele of the University of British Columbia; and Dr. Otto Klineberg of Columbia University); and valuable summaries of discussions by Dr. Murray Ross (York University), Mgr. Irénée Lussier (Université de Montréal), and Dr. N.A.M. MacKenzie (University of British Columbia).
Book Synopsis Textual Conspiracies by : James Martel
Download or read book Textual Conspiracies written by James Martel and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is a sophisticated and fascinating argument written in a very enjoyably entertaining style. It is hard for me to see how readers initially interested in these texts will not be ‘swept off their feet’ by the core assertions of this author, and the devastatingly comprehensive way in which he demonstrates those arguments.” —Brent Steele, University of Kansas In Textual Conspiracies, James R. Martel applies the literary, theological, and philosophical insights of Walter Benjamin to the question of politics and the predicament of the contemporary left. Through the lens of Benjamin’s theories, as influenced by Kafka, of the fetishization of political symbols and signs, Martel looks at the ways in which various political and literary texts “speak” to each other across the gulf of time and space, thereby creating a “textual conspiracy” that destabilizes grand narratives of power and authority and makes the narratives of alternative political communities more apparent. However, in keeping with Benjamin’s insistence that even he is complicit with the fetishism that he battles, Martel decentralizes Benjamin’s position as the key theorist for this conspiracy and contextualizes Benjamin in what he calls a “constellation” of pairs of thinkers and writers throughout history, including Alexis de Tocqueville and Edgar Allen Poe, Hannah Arendt and Federico García Lorca, and Frantz Fanon and Assia Djebar.
Download or read book Game Over? written by Christophe Chalamet and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern science informs us about the end of the universe: "game over" is the message which lies ahead of our world. Christian theology, on the other hand, sees in the end not the cessation of all life, but rather an invitation to play again, in God's presence. Is there a way to articulate together such vastly different claims? Eschatology is a theological topic which merits being considered from several different angles. This book seeks to do this by gathering contributions from esteemed and fresh voices from the fields of biblical exegesis, history, systematic theology, philosophy, and ethics. How can we make sense, today, of Jesus' (and the New Testament's) eschatological message? How did he, his early disciples, and the Christian tradition, envision the "end" of the world? Is there a way for us to articulate together what modern science tells us about the end of the universe with the biblical and Christian claims about God who judges and who will wipe every tear? Eschatology has been at the heart of Christian theology for 100 years in the West. What should we do with this legacy? Are there ways to move our reflection forward, in our century? Scholars and other interested readers will find here a wealth of insights.
