Il décrit, dans ce livre, comment il a vécu les aspects tragiques ou insolites de leurs combats : le drame de Dakar, la libération du Gabon ou les actions en Érythrée. Il fait surtout revivre, au jour le jour, l'enfermement dans un sous-marin en mer de Norvège, les débarquements de commandos, les embuscades pour couler des cargos et navires de guerre ennemis. Jugé par l'État français (Vichy), Etienne Schlumberger est condamné aux travaux forcés à perpétuité en avril 1943 pour désertion et trahison ; il est nommé, en 1945, compagnon de la Libération. Rappelant l'attitude de la marine française pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les auteurs s'attachent à comprendre la persistance des amiraux dans leur refus de reprendre le combat auprès des Alliés (Mers el-Kébir, Alexandrie, Dakar, Bizerte, Toulon...) alors que, intacts, les navires pouvaient appareiller. Les auteurs rendent justice aux marins volontaires des FNFL, souvent ignorés, parfois bafoués. Loin de Londres, ils ont conforté l'action du général de Gaulle et contribué à la Libération. Ce récit les amène à la question cruelle et toujours actuelle de la désobéissance à un ordre reçu qui heurte la conscience.
