Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lepidoptera, Rhopaloceres and Heteroceres, Indigenous and Exotic: With Descriptions and Colored Illustrations Not only is our own, and the Lepidopterous fauna of other countries, constantly receiving numerous additions, but innumerable species of already described Lepidoptera, both native and exotic, have never been figured, and as a consequent result are in very many instances unknown to the student. Having, during the course of over twenty years' study and collecting, amassed a great quantity of material, I have concluded to endeavor to carry out my long-cherished idea of publishing illustrations and descriptions of such undescribed species as I may possess or have access to. The number is immense, embracing many uniques, types, and other great rarities of the North American fauna; also to figure such species as have been heretofore described but not figured. I do not intend to confine myself strictly to North American species, but will illustrate new or unfigured species from any other part of the world - as the value of exotics for purposes of comparison, I think no one will dispute. Inasmuch as nature, or nature's God, did not divide the earth into kingdoms, counties, or townships, I don't see why we should do so in scientific matters. For my part, I consider an example from Europe, Africa, or elsewhere, as interesting an object of study as a North American one; but, of course, as it happened to be my luck to be born on that portion of the earth's mud, stones, and water, called America, I will give precedence to the species of this country. It is my purpose to issue one number every month - each number to have one plate; but where the size of the species will admit, I will put as many figures on one plate as possible. Where they are of small size, I will give sometimes as high as a dozen species on the same plate, but only less than two when the size is very large - as in the first illustration, where one necessarily occupied the whole page. Of course upper and under surface will always be given, and both sexes with larvae and stages of transformation whenever possible. The figures will all be drawn and colored by myself from nature. My wish is to secure a sufficient number of subscribers, at as early a date as possible, to pay the expenses of printing and paper. The hope of being even in a small way useful in this my favorite science will be more than sufficient reward for my own trouble and labor. As soon as I can secure an adequate number of subscribers, I will add one other plate to each number, without increasing the price - which is fifty cents per number. I will always give as complete technical description and history of species as possible, also such observations or facts as I may deem of general interest to the Entomologist. Book excerpt: The noctuidae of the world, a family with numerous important agricultural pests, comprises about a third of the entire order Lepidoptera. This new three-volume set is the first complete catalog for the world. About 38,000 named species (including known synonyms) are listed alphabetically under each genus name in over 1,000 pages of text. Genera area also listed alphabetically, but subfamily affiliations are noted for each of the valid names to enable users to segregate genera by subfamily. Valid names are noted in boldface. Synonyms are listed for each genus and species; the species synonyms are also listed alphabetically among the valid names, thus enabling users to make two kinds of searches in the text as well as in the index. The catalog provides citation data on all described names (other than infraspecific names), with references cited in the compete bibliography at the end. Reference is also made to more important papers on the biology, larvae, host plants, and illustrations for each species, again with full titles noted in the bibliography. The main host plants for each species, where known, are listed under each. Details of holotypes, where known, are also noted. The bibliography has entries for approximately 4,400 papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 26, 1924, the ground collapsed beneath a truck in a back alley in Washington, D.C., revealing a mysterious underground labyrinth. In spite of wild speculations, the tunnel was not the work of German spies, but rather an aging, eccentric Smithsonian scientist named Harrison Gray Dyar, Jr. While Dyar's covert tunneling habits may seem far-fetched, they were merely one of many oddities in Dyar's unbelievable life. For the first time, insect biosystematist Marc E. Epstein presents a complete account of Dyar's life story. Dyar, one of the most influential biologists of the twentieth century, focused his entomological career on building natural classifications of various groups of insects. His revolutionary approach to taxonomy, which examined both larval and adult stages of insects, brought about major changes in the scientific community's understanding of natural relationships and insect systematics. He was also the father of what came to be known as Dyar's Law, a pragmatic method to standardize information on insect larval stages as they grow. Over the course of his illustrious career at the U.S. National Museum, Smithsonian Institution from 1897-1929, Dyar named over 3,000 species, established the "List of North American Lepidoptera," an unrivaled catalog of moths and butterflies, and built one of the nation's premier lepidoptera and mosquito collections. However, Dyar's scientific accomplishments are a mere component of this remarkable biography. Epstein offers an account of Dyar's complicated personal life, from his feuds with fellow entomologists to the scandalous revelation that he was married to two wives at the same time. Epstein also chronicles Dyar's exploration of the Baha'i faith, his extensive travels, his innumerable works of unpublished fiction, and the loss of his wealth from bad investments. Comprehensive and engaging, Moths, Myths, and Mosquitoes will delight entomologists and historians alike, as well as anyone interested in exploring the zany life of one of America's virtually unknown scientific geniuses.
