Aussi, l'auteur a-t-il étudié le comportement d'un échantillon d'entreprises, donnant à son travail une dimension de recherche appliquée. Ce livre a donc, dès l'abord, un double mérite. D'un côté, il offre une modélisation riche et précise des problèmes complexes que pose la politique de l'emploi dans l'entreprise ; de l'autre, il montre comment les comportements observés peuvent s'interpréter à partir d'objectifs privilégiant tantôt la croissance, tantôt la rentabilité et en fonction d'une activité économique tantôt en croissance, tantôt fluctuante. Très solidement construit, étayé par une excellente bibliographie, aussi agréablement écrit que le permet un travail de recherche, le livre de Raymond Leban devrait donc intéresser un large cercle de professionnels et d'étudiants, tant en économie qu'en gestion.
