Ouvrir le dossier de l'Eglise de France sous l'occupation et à la Libération, c'est traiter ses rapports avec l'Etat. Le gouvernement de Vichy fut bienveillant et exigeant. Il écrasa l'Eglise des bienfaits qu'elle réclamait: subventions à l'école libre, statut des congrégations, avantages fiscaux, emprise sur la jeunesse, participation aux institutions sociales. A la Libération, le général de Gaulle, respectueux de l'appréciation de Pie XII sur l'Eglise de France, se résigna à une épuration ecclésiastique décevante pour les résistants politisés, mais insupportable pour une Eglise qui ne se sentait pas coupable. La recherche entreprise par Michèle Cointet ne se limite pas au cléricalisme, mais traite à fond les rapports de l'Eglise et des juifs, et envisage toute la vie du peuple catholique. Les évêques ont soutenu le maréchal Pétain mais les premiers résistants sont des chrétiens. Si la législation antisémite de l'Etat français a des inspirateurs et serviteurs catholiques, ce sont plusieurs évêques qui élevèrent les premières protestations contre les rafles de Juifs. Proportionnellement au corps social, les prêtres et les religieux ont été les plus nombreux dans les camps de concentration. Autre surprise, Michèle Cointet montre que la Seconde Guerre mondiale a été une grande période de foi. Les prêtres-ouvriers sont nés de la Mission de France et de l'aumônerie des Français travaillant en Allemagne et découvrant un christianisme dépouillé. L'Eglise y voit le moyen de conquérir la classe ouvrière et de triompher du communisme. En historienne soucieuse de replacer les faits et les personnages dans leur temps, d'éviter ainsi les anachronismes, Michèle Cointet nous donne un ouvrage très neuf et très complet, dépourvu de tout manichéisme, d'où il ressort que l'attitude de l'Eglise sous l'Occupation ne se prête pas aux jugements simplistes et réducteurs en vigueur aujourd'hui.

La quatrième partie, intitulée le temps des sauvetages, étudie les moyens employés par l'épiscopat, le c1ergé et les congrégations religieuses pour empêcher la reprise des rafles et protéger les persécutés.

While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.
