Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twenty-first century, education about and through the media has become a worldwide phenomenon, and is playing an increasingly important role in educational reform. The theory and practice of media education have profited greatly from recent and intensive development and application of new information and telecommunications technologies. Consequently, the importance of media and information literacy is taking on an even greater urgency. With this in mind, the contributors to this volume survey what has taken place over the last decade in different parts of the world, examine the current state of theoretical, conceptual, and research development, and consider where media education is going and where it ought to go. With two-thirds of its 22 contributions coming from outside the United States, Media Literacy around the World is a genuine international effort, with many leading media and information educators in the world taking part. The work converts the notion of globalism from a slogan into a working hypothesis. The concerns in this volume are with literacy not just in computer technology, but as a broad concern of the educational process.

Book Synopsis The Knowledge Economy by : Aspen Inst., Queenstown, MD.
Download or read book The Knowledge Economy written by Aspen Inst., Queenstown, MD. and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication contains six essays responding to the following themes: information as a resource to be shared; whether and how new technologies are causing change in the nature and definition of information; and how changes are affecting the fields of education, economics, sociology, technology, business, and world affairs. Following the foreword (Paul J. Myer), examples of the range of information available to everyone are reviewed in an introduction to the essays (Nicholas Johnson). The value of information is discussed in "The Role of Technology in an Information Age" (Stephen H. Haeckel and Richard L. Nolan). "The Economics of Information" (Roger G. Noll) provides a readable introduction to the subject for noneconomists. "Competing with Information" (Blake Ives and Sirkka L. Jarvenpaa) provides a theoretical base and a case study for conclusions about the nature of information for business, predicting information and expertise will supplant physical goods as the basis of developed nations' economies. "The Promise of a New World Information Order" (Peter F. Cowhey and M. Margaret McKeown) addresses issues such as the utility of the content of global communications. "Technology, Information, and Social Behavior" (Sara B. Kiesler and Pamela Hinds) suggests that it may be as important to study people as information technology itself. "Network Literacy in an Electronic Society" (Charles R. McClure) describes the educational implications of the changing nature of information. (KRN)
Book Synopsis Travellers, Merchants and Settlers in the Eastern Mediterranean, 11th-14th Centuries by : David Jacoby
Download or read book Travellers, Merchants and Settlers in the Eastern Mediterranean, 11th-14th Centuries written by David Jacoby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies (the eighth by David Jacoby) covers a period witnessing intensive geographic mobility across the Mediterranean, illustrated by a growing number of Westerners engaging in pilgrimage, crusade, trading and shipping, or else driven by sheer curiosity. This movement also generated western settlement in the eastern Mediterranean region. A complex encounter of Westerners with eastern Christians and the Muslim world occurred in crusader Acre, the focus of two papers; a major emporium, it was also the scene of fierce rivalry between the Italian maritime powers. The fall of the crusader states in 1291 put an end to western mobility in the Levant and required a restructuring of trade in the region. The next five studies show how economic incentives promoted western settlement in the Byzantine provinces conquered by western forces during the Fourth Crusade and soon after. Venice fulfilled a major function in Latin Constantinople from 1204 to 1261. The city's progressive economic recovery in that period paved the way for its role as transit station furthering western trade and colonization in the Black Sea region. Venice had also a major impact on demographic and economic developments in Euboea, located along the maritime route connecting Italy to Constantinople. On the other hand, military factors drove an army of western mercenaries to establish in central Greece a Catalan state, which survived from 1311 to the 1380s.

Download or read book The Virtual Community, revised edition written by Howard Rheingold and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-10-23 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Rheingold tours the "virtual community" of online networking. Howard Rheingold has been called the First Citizen of the Internet. In this book he tours the "virtual community" of online networking. He describes a community that is as real and as much a mixed bag as any physical community—one where people talk, argue, seek information, organize politically, fall in love, and dupe others. At the same time that he tells moving stories about people who have received online emotional support during devastating illnesses, he acknowledges a darker side to people's behavior in cyberspace. Indeed, contends Rheingold, people relate to each other online much the same as they do in physical communities. Originally published in 1993, The Virtual Community is more timely than ever. This edition contains a new chapter, in which the author revisits his ideas about online social communication now that so much more of the world's population is wired. It also contains an extended bibliography.
